I have quite a few tanners who are losing their color too. They are doing the max time in our highest beds with the designer skin tingle lotions. I have no idea why they are losing their color but i will mention the exfoliation idea. I tried as well to give them a different lotion but its not working too well at all. let me know if anyone has any other ideas!

I had an interesting follow-up call yesterday that I wanted to share with everyone.
This individual has been tanning for some time a (Salon Owner) and had noticed that her facial area was not tanning as well as it had in the past. (Subjective observation I know, but from a good source) This well educated salon owner from the Northeast, which is knowledgeable about tanning and skincare called me a few weeks ago when it seemed like it was getting worse.

She uses a facial tanning product when tanning, and for some reason was wondering why her face was not holding a tan like it once did. The good news was that yesterdays call was one to let me know what we talked about seemed to be working.

There are various reasons why we lose the ability to tan especially as we age. Generally speaking we naturally we lose approximately 6-8% melanocyte density per decade as we age. This is a natural process and occurs both in uv-exposed and non-exposed skin, but is most common on the head, face and forearms (which by the way at birth have the greatest density of melanocytes).

In addition to the normal loss of melanocyte density as we age there are several other factors that contribute to hypo-pigmentation, or decrease color of the skin caused by a reduced amount of melanin.

Vitiligo is one, and is a condition, which causes a loss of pigment, for reasons not completely understood, and it is not known to be linked to exposure or disease. More common in women than men, Vitiligo can occur at any age, however normally appears between the ages of 10-40.

Interestingly enough, this individual has not got much older since the loss in color and all the other condition, including not showing sign of Vitiligo had remained the same.

Except one… Over the counter, “high-end” dermatologist recommend facial treatment.

Mock-like hypo-pigmentation can also be caused by use of OTC skin lightening creams, (here is the take home interesting point to remember) many of which are not directly labeled as skin lighteners.

A few of the ingredients that have been shown to lighten the skin are Diacetyl Benzoyl Lathyrol, Hydroquinone (most common), Triticum Vulgare (wheat) Germ Extract.

What she was using was a product called Night Reform, which was like a double edge sword because it container not only the Triticum Vulgare (wheat) Germ Extract, it also contained Glycolic Acid.

Not that you can monitor every product that your customers use, but this was a good example that you may be able to share with someone when trying to explain why Daily Hydration moisturizers, facial lotions and body washes sold in the salon environment are not the same as products purchased over the counter at your standard food and drug retail outlet.

Iwas going to ask if the clients had been using moisturizers (other than tanning products before they come in and tan?

Bar soap is not the best thing for your skin too.
Maybe have them use some moisturizers or tan extenders.
Good Luck!

Also applying a non-tingle accelerator after showering will help to stimulate melanin production. Use a tingle before tanning for the extra kick.
Do not use bar soap!!! Use a high quality, non drying body wash.
All these posts prove once again, that you should not buy cheap, Walmart type skin care and lotions!!!
If you want quality skin-use quality products!

Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth. Some advice for tanners. Never ever use bar soaps, the PH level is so high it has a reaction with the ph level that our skin already has, and this drys out the skin more. Bar Soap..no.no. Shower gels are best for skin, they all will work well....yes even the salon sold ones, but the marketed brands are ok too.
Exfoliating to much is not good either, but it is good to do after a few sessions, in the winter some clients find they need to do it more, because skin seems to be dryer in the winter months. Smart tan did an article last year about the ph in bar soaps, shared it with clients and did they salt scrubs and shower gels fly off the shelves. Now, to the face issue. Had a client/employee last year whose face would not tan, we discussed this and relized she was using a mall sold facial cleanser and this was why her face was not tanning, she stopped using it everyday, to about twice a week and vola' her faced started to tan. Alot of facial cleansing have bleaching agents in them and they prevent the face from tanning. Thats, my 2cents.

Hello New Girl on the Block here I went to a Cal Tan 'Training and Learned That During the tanning process It is very Important to stay away from products with mineral oil The Rep said if your client is not tanning ask them if they are using items at home such as Bath and Body Works (Very Popular) Lubaderm (excuse spelling ha) Although she said there is nothing Wrong with these products and we all Love them They just need to be sat aside during the tanning process #1 Bad Guy Mineral OIL !! I have asked customers when they complain they are not gettting tan or losing tan fast if they use any of these or any thing with Mineral oil you will be surprised how many are they stop and IT DOES WORK !!!! also another nice tip I Picked up for the white spots Head and shoulders for body wash WORKS GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited about this site and looking forward to getting to know everyone and learn from all this salon knowledge in one Site This site is a Salon Owners Dream ! Peace Out Jana
