Hello! I am a newbie to tantalk. Actually, I have been lurking for a while and did e-mail Mitzi last week and she was a lot of help(thanks again).
I want to give a brief "tanning" history and then ask some questions that are pertinent in my tanning regime. I have been a seasonal tanner for probably the last 5 years or so. I have tanned locally at 3 different places. Not once was I ever offered any instruction on skin typing, lotions, etc, so I did my own thing not realizing the risks. One salon even insisted no lotion of any kind in its one bed (extremely rural) so I got used to not using any which, of course, I know now to be WRONG just from the lurking I have done. I never tanned to excess but I did burn in the early stages of my seasonal tanning. I usually just wanted some "color" so as not to look neon white here in FL. I took the skin typing questionnaire from this site and I graded out as a 29-31. My natural hair color is medium brown and I have brown eyes. Both parents tan well when exposed to the sun. I do have some freckles but my back has quite a few moles, of which I have had a couple removed in the past (before I ever started tanning) and all were benign. There is a family history of melanoma although that person never "baked" as a child or adult. Recently, I bought a Peacock residential vertical unit because I work at home and it is a pain for me to have to drive to tan since nothing is really close and this is much more convenient for me since I am a workaholic. My husband installed it Saturday and I used it for the first time on Sunday night for 5 minutes. Mitzi recommended the JA products and they are on my agenda but the only thing I could find on Saturday night when I went looking for a good lotion was CalTan so I bought Climax from a salon that is 45 minutes away or so. (Mitzi, I'll have to do some research to locate JA products around here since we're in a small area but they sound perfect for me). The Climax came with a bottle of Total Immersion. I drink tons of water every day so that will be a behavior that does not need to be modified. I guess what I would like to know is that now that I have spent the money that I have if tanning is completely contraindicated with my family history and mole situation, etc., or if following the guidelines that I read about here on tantalk if I can proceed. I can't imagine not tanning. I always feel better when I do and I think I look better obviously. Thanks for reading and any advice would be greatly appreciated on what extra precautions, if any, I need to do to protect my skin. |

If you have not had skin cancer then you are clear to tan.. but remember everything in moderation.. build your time up slowly .. Just b/c you did not burn at 5 minutes does not mean you are automatically ready to go up.. Continue w/5minutes until you see no results then go up... CalTan products are wonderful and you will not be let down. Use the total immersion (you will see even better results)... You have done good by finding experts to help

Hi Julie, it was great talking to you last week, too. I received the products yesterday (Saturday). Thanks for the lip balm. It was greatly appreciated! How did you know that my lips were taking a beating?!?! The products are divine. My skin is so soft! I was wondering if it is okay to use the tanner and hydrating lotion on my face or if I needed different products (same question with eyes). Gosh I wish I lived closer to the salon. I am so excited for all of you about the new salon opening. If I get a chance to get down that way, I am going to book a day with you! Congrats to Chris.

Casperette, Sounds like you are doing well. Remember to keep your time to moderate tanning and you will do fine. Also, keep an eye on your moles for any changes. You are in good hands with Julie and Christine. Both are wonderful gals.
And I know what you mean about living closer to them,,,, I would schedule at least 3-4 days a month with them for all their pampering and skin care. |
