I had a very interesting conversation with a lovely young college girl this afternoon who tans on a regular basis in a salon near her college in Mississippi....

When I heard about her buying her lotions on line..I asked her why she does this.....
It was all about the price.....and her need to save money..
We spent quite a bit together talking about this situation and you know what I think here people....
THIS YOUNG LADY MADE A WHOLE LOT OF SENSE!!!

Dollars are important to each of us....
We are in business to make money yes in deed....
but I want to speak for my self on this one and say I am in this industry because of my passion for what it is that we do.......WE SERVE PEOPLE...and in SERVICE we do what we each feel is the best.......

What I am going to do is this...
High School and College kids who bring in their report card with good grades will get a perk.....maybe buy a package and get your lotion at 30% off........... something..... my goodness..........Yes I need to pay my bills...yes I need to pay my staff and keep my studio up to standards and educate about proper tanning....but I also need to help people acheive their goals......and if they are having a hard time with the $$$$ well.....I need to be aware that I want to keep them as apart of what we do......
Also I am going to help my guests out with running lotion specials through-out the months.......like do a special feature on a certain lotion at 30% off....to generate their desire to reach their goals with the brands we have on our shelves.....

We have been in business a long time and we continue to grow and strengthen our corner on the indoor tanning market in our area despite the fact that several salons are near by and new ones are springing up all over the place.....

I appreciate my guests......with-out them I wouldn't have a job........

Yes Chris, everyone wants to save on the stuff they purchase. I do understand this. But we need to get the diverters stopped. I run lotion specials all the time. I pick a brand and put a discount on it for a week or sometimes a month. Depends on how much I have in stock and I like to keep stock fresh.

We can run special and still pay our bills, but if the fleas or online sites are selling at cost, then that makes it hard to compete and still pay our bills....

Oh I totaly agree with you Mitzi.
I was just saying I really heard what this young lady was saying....It was all about the $$$$
She said she has a salon selling lotions at 3Xs or more than what we sell for.....
She was made to pay 30.00 for a bottle of Wanna Be by Body Invest...
The bottle sells for 14.00 in our studio Mitzi.....come on now.....that just is NOT RIGHT!!!

No that isn't right.... No wonder more and more are going for the online sites or flea markets. Someone should tell that salon to stop running them in that direction! Crazy Crazy

That is why on line is important so we can all try to understand each others feelings and goals..

Christine'! That is a really good idea to reward good students! My salon does put lotions on special. I do buy online, but I also want to make it clear that I buy at the salon too. I purchase many samples and a few full size bottles there too. The people that own my salon are sweet, helpful people and I don't want to screw them over any more than I want to be screwed over, ya know? I totally understand where salon owners are coming from, and of course tanners are probably going to have a different point of view and opinion. I think what really gets me is when I (and other tanners who purchase online) are called, cheap, and other derogotive (sp) names. That just isn't right. EVERYONE wants to get good deals. Salon owners AND tanners. So I know I don't appreciate being called names because I chose to get a good product AND save a little money. If I had plenty of money, I probably would just buy from the salon. I am so incredibly impatient it is ridiculous! LOL

Anyway, I think I am babbling. Just wanted to add in my opinion from a tanner's point of view. I think as long as there is a mutual respect between us all, there can be a happy medium reached. Have a great day all!

Or we can do what Mori suggests give the stuff away. He was suggesting that we crybaby whinning salon owners sell it for what they sell it for on line. Canadians!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Tantalker,,,,, I could sell lotion for what they buy on the net,,but then I would have to raise tan sessions in order to pay the expenises.

Then again I can upcharge on the product a bit in order to educate them and tan them.

Christine,

I think that you are doing a wonderful thing. What is the saying--"one hand washes the other".... If you help them out by making lotions more affordable, then they will help you out by buying from your studio.
