I had a client come in today and said that they have been itching for the last three days. This person is a male model, young aprox 17 - 18. He purchased a copper shot from doctor sun and tanned for 15 minutes. He said that the itching is so severe that he cannot sleep at night. He said that he did not have a rash or any bumps on his skin.

I thought that being winter, and taking into account that he has not tanned in a while that it was probably dry skin. This led me to recommend that they try a lotion to help relieve the itching. He stated that he tried lotion and that it did not help.

We use the Cal-Tan cleaning system to clean our beds and as I stated before he used the copper shot from Dr. Sun. Has anyone ran into something like this from these products or is it most likely what I suspect....dry skin.

What do you fellow tantalkers suggest for people that have this problem?

It is hard to tell from here. But I don't think it would be the cleaner, unless you have it mixed to strong.

I have had several clients in the past that react to the copper in products. This would be my first guess.

Second, it could be his skin reacting to the UV, which he hasn't been exposed to.

But I strongly suspect the copper.

Did you see the skin ?
Was the skin very dry? Patchy? Did he have a moisturizer he was using that you sold him to use after tanning?
Was he using a moisturizer you did not know about aftet his session?

Did he have on a fragrence? What does he shower with?

Theres a lot of factors we need to look at here ok...

What is in a "copper shot"? Tell me the properties in the "shot".
What type of skin does he have?
When was the last time he was exposed to UV?

Cal Care is not known to give a reaction...even if it is not 100% off the bed..
We personaly did testing of this.and out of 25 subjects not one had a reaction.. each had a different skin type...and different exposure to UV.with a little cal care on the acrylic.......
Did you mix the cal care to the exact instructions?

Give us a bit more info here if you can..
So we can try to figure this for you....

I did see his skin and it looked fine. It had no visible redness or rash. It was red where he had been itching.

He was using a suave lotion that he purchased at a local retail store. He said that he was using quite a bit.

Of course we mixed the cal care to the instructions. Its fool proof. You just fill the bottle to the top of the label and add the cartdrige.

The copper shot could have been a bit strong for him if he hasnt tanned for awhile..
Also some people have a reaction to copper at a 5% this could have made him reactive...

It is hard to say what it might be.

If there was no redness or bumps you could see..but only patches where he scratched himself...it could have even been a reaction to a soap he used before UV exposure that he had still on his body.......

See if he has the reaction again if he uses a different product with no copper........

I hooked him up with a good moisturizer and they said that it helped a lot. But after 3 1/2 to 4 days who knows if it was the lotion or if it just went away on its own. He used the copper shot again the day before yesterday. I know, I know...But I warned him that it might be the copper in the lotion that was making him itch. In your listing of the ingredients in the Copper Shot, you mention "mica bronzing powder". My guess is the client is reacting to the mica (made from silica).

This is often used in shimmer products to produce the gleen effect. I have heard of customers complaining of similar symptoms after using certain products containing mica, although never to this degree. Of course, it is a minority of people who have this type of reaction. Those few just need to avoid products with mica in it.

Let us know how this progresses.

Ray I agree with the Mica.but it was so far down on the list I though it couldn't have caused such a blow out reaction..
but....maybe you are right......Mica can cause a reaction.....

Ya know, it just could have been the "tanners itch" normally occurs between 2 - 5 sessions. Common with the skin adapting to the UV.
