My son has acne. What is the BEST medicine for this? I have heard about minocycline and some other new drug.

What do you recommend?

fungirlz 01-02-2003 02:17 PM

Is it acne Mike or out break?
If it is looking bad Mike....see a Derm. they can give him anti-biotics if needed or a topical medication...

Is he washing too much? or not enough?

A lot of people mistake out break in teenage skin for Acne.... Is it on the face only....or chest and back also????????
Describe it....and his life style along with diet and we can go from there..

minocycline can cause the teen to have a lack in wanting food.......... no desire for it at all.... this is NOT good .........
Some teens have been known to give up food when taking this medication.............. we need to see if its Acne or just teen skin

HOT 01-02-2003 03:34 PM

My twins use a product they get from the Dermatologists. It's a cream called Benzomycin. It clears them right up. They use it on their back too!

Another product you may want to try is Pro Active Solution. I have seen and heard great things about this product.

But like Christine said, you may want to go to the Dermatologist!

Good luck!

I remember those Acne days! Poor kid.

fungirlz 01-02-2003 05:28 PM

Remember all teens have some sort of condition going on........
either physical or mental........
or BOTH at the same time......

CHUNN 01-02-2003 08:32 PM

It's only on his face. His going through puberty! His biological dad ( see him twice ) looks like he has some scaring from acne but not really sure.

He eats the same foods as the rest of us.

It has to be genetic! Remember he's adopted.

fungirlz 01-02-2003 09:01 PM

If by nature it runs in the family Mike see the Derm. ...
Certain foods you and the rest of family enjoy may cause reaction to your son.
The Derm will be able to get him straight.

Tell him if it is important to him he get this straight.... he must follow the list given to him by the doctor.

Try to get him to wash his hands and not touch his face so much.... also tell him not to over wash the face.........this creates more problems...........

Change the pillow cases every other day.....and make sure the phones he uses are kept clean. Acne creates germs....... this is all normal teenage stuff.........

Acne is a battle...but if he follows his meds along with proper skin care am and pm. he will survive. Tell him it will get better.

See the Derm though. if your son was here by us we'd treat him in a minute.....
Let us know what meds the doctor gives him...

Thanks. Will keep you updated.

shawnchunn 01-05-2003 10:29 PM

This is his son who has the acne or whatever. Thank you for your input. My face looks horrible and I have tried tons of products and none has worked.

fungirlz 01-06-2003 10:46 AM

Hang in there buddy.... it will get better...
Try to drink more water during your day..
Don't use harsh products on your skin when washing it...
After you see the doctor let us know what he gives you.....
Try to stay away from too much soda pop or beverages with alot of sugars or artificial sweetners...
Let us hear from you...

Remember you are not alone in this battle Shawn..

shawnchunn 01-06-2003 01:15 PM

Thaks for the info. I try not to drink so much sugar because it gets me really active and then I get in trouble. I wash my face everyday. I just don't know what to do. I have been pressuring dad(chunn) to take me to a derm.

BronzeDong 01-06-2003 11:29 PM

acutane works the best...gets rid of everything with in 2 months

fungirlz 01-06-2003 11:45 PM

acutane is very harsh.
It also can damage your liver, and other organs.

People on acutane can scar easy also..

This is very serious/aggressive medication and unless your doctor monitors you on a regualr basis I would not suggest it.

After using this drug it takes almost 24 months to leave the body completely.............

Shawn have your dad take you to the derm......
You will get it under control.

shawnchunn 01-07-2003 12:13 PM

I think he will take me. He will be gone for two weeks from now. He may take me when he gets back.

fungirlz 01-07-2003 04:46 PM

He will..... I'll remind him to take you honey..

shawnchunn 01-07-2003 04:49 PM

BronzeDong 01-07-2003 05:56 PM

acutane best stuff out there liver damage blah blah i have seen at leat 15 people completely satisfied with this med..... scars are going to happen when you have craters on your mug

moto-x-girly 01-07-2003 06:13 PM

When you do go to the derm, ask them about Retin A Micro. Its less harsh then Acutane and I believe there's less side effects.
Good Luck!

shawnchunn 01-07-2003 07:06 PM

ok. I will check on that. I don't know when I will go though.

BronzeBabe 01-07-2003 10:42 PM

Shawn...also ask about differin gel it is also a very good product, I used it and skin cleared up nicely for a while but I have very very stubborn skin and unfortunately had to resort to the accutane...twice

Tropical Image 01-07-2003 11:09 PM

Ok Shawn
My bro had the worst skin i think possible when he was a teenage...

As time went on it began to get a little better, but believe me he tried EVERYTHING!
He begged my mother to let him go on acutane and she would not.

Acutane should be banned... it has caused numerous suicides, mood changes, not to mention the damage on ur vital organs...

If you want to get an easy clear up.... use
Benzymyocin... (its a topical gel you keep refrigerated) put it on at night, wake up in the morning and your acne will look much better...

Acne also has a lot to do with what you eat... try to hold back on caffeine products, they tend to trigger breakouts...

Trust me as you start getting older, your skin will eventually start getting better... Keep your self esteem high! (STRESS ALSO CONTRIBUTES TO ACNE!)

shawnchunn 01-08-2003 08:02 AM

I will get my dad to look at all of these when he takes me to the derm.

fungirlz 01-08-2003 08:50 AM

Acutane should be banned... it has caused numerous suicides, mood changes, not to mention the damage on ur vital organs...

Thank-you for this post TropicalImage.......

I agree Acutane is a very harsh and damaging medication that should be reconsidered by the FDA.

shawnchunn 01-08-2003 04:44 PM

That does sound very crazy to take it.

fungirlz 01-09-2003 09:00 AM

Before you would ever take that drug......the doctor would do a complete check up including liver and kidney.....
the doctor would advise you of ALL the negitives of the medicine and then go from there.

For some folks Acutane is the last resort for them to get their skin in order....
You are just a teen Shawn.this is very normal...and you will get it worked out.

BillCard 01-09-2003 03:52 PM

I use the Retin-A, it really works well and has three power levels. They usually start you out with the weakest one. Stick with it though, with any of these medicines it will make it worse at first.
Also try to find an antibacterial soap to use. This can make a big difference.

Caution, these medicines can make your face much much more sensentive to light, so if you tan cover your face with a town when tanning.

Good Luck

shawnchunn 01-09-2003 04:43 PM

My dad(chunn) was saying he saw something like a retin-a and he said that it might work.

fungirlz 01-12-2003 09:40 AM

remember you can not expose the skin to UV if using this medication.
If you are on a low dose..it will not dry out the skin as much as a 15% or higher....
Some young adults have quite a bit of peeling when using this product.
You will get results Shawn from Retin-A....... but you will also get quite alot of peeling if it is a strong percent.

Be sure to wash hands very good before putting this on your skin and after.........

Let us know what the doctor says you should use.

BooBop 01-12-2003 11:20 AM

Mike/Trina!!! Please take Shawn to the Derm. He is stressing way to much, which is not good for him at all.

Have him examined ASAP!

shawnchunn 01-12-2003 12:09 PM

I have told them that over and over and they said they would but they never have.

BooBop 01-12-2003 12:44 PM

I am gonna call human services for Child Neglect

CHUNN 01-12-2003 12:54 PM

I talked with Trina the other day and she said that she was making an appointment for him.

Shawn stresses way too much!

shawnchunn 01-12-2003 01:01 PM

What! Do I really? Well. If you had a face that looked like a bunch of Volcanes were having a meeting you wouldn't like it either.

BooBop 01-12-2003 01:12 PM

funny Shawn, and I am sure you are exagerating a little here.

BTW Mike I was only joking about human services. Bad joke on my part.

shawnchunn 01-12-2003 01:41 PM

Well. That is how my face looks sometimes and it get very annoying.

BronzeBabe 01-12-2003 06:21 PM

I completely understand where you are coming from Shawn....My dermatologist says I have some of the most stubborn skin! I have had acne since I was in junior high and I am still battling it..I do not have any scarring or noticable marks from having acne....I have been on everything under the sun and am currently taking accutane for the second time..Uugh! I definitly would not wish the side effects on
anyone...I wish you the best and pray and hope you are just having the teen acne!!

shawnchunn 01-12-2003 06:24 PM

I hope mine doesn't last that long.

BronzeBabe 01-12-2003 06:27 PM

I hope it does not last that long for you either

shawnchunn 01-12-2003 06:54 PM

I wonder what I would look like if it did.

BronzeBabe 01-12-2003 07:00 PM

Shawn when you look at me..you would never know that I have such stubborn skin and that I have been dealing with acne for so long..I take very good care of my skin and I think that is the key.....
I just hope that after this 2nd treatment of accutane I am done!!
I think I have had my fair share of the whole acne thing!!!
