Would you recomend Accutane? or some other medicine?

BronzeBabe 01-12-2003 06:54 PM

Shawn...accutane is for acne that cannot be treated with any other medication...like I stated before I have tried everything under the sun...and nothing really worked so as a result I was put on accutane.
In your case they will probably put you on something a lot less harsh..to start out with and build on that..
They will not recommend Accutane unless it is a last resort.
BTW..how old are you?
Don't worry..the dermatologist that you go see will help you get everything under control!!

shawnchunn 01-12-2003 07:15 PM

oh. ok. Thanks. I thought it was a strong medicine that they would put you on if you had it really bad.

BronzeBabe 01-12-2003 07:18 PM

Normally they will try other medications to see if those work first!

Christina

shawnchunn 01-12-2003 07:30 PM

ok. I will ask them anout that though. other people said it kinda messes you up like makes you not hungry or light headed. Is that true?

BronzeBabe 01-12-2003 08:45 PM

I would have liked if it would have made me not hungry
But seriously though it does have some really bad side effects like depression, mental disorders, abdomen problems, bone and muscle problems, hearing problems, vision problems ....... and yes some people can have eating problems and also become light-headed

Christina

shawnchunn 01-12-2003 08:49 PM

Oh my gosh. That sounds bad.

shawnchunn 01-15-2003 04:43 PM

I just had a major break out and it nis clearing up. I found myself playing with them in school. I hatre my face.

BronzeBabe 01-15-2003 04:58 PM

Have your parents made an appointment for you yet?

Christina

CHUNN 01-15-2003 09:08 PM

My wife said no. Things are extremely busy at the moment. Should I elaborate?

YU-CAN-TAN-TOO 01-15-2003 09:13 PM

Shawn, I understand what your going through and I can tell you that stress can be a contributing factor. So if there are any exercises or stress releif you could find it would certainly wouldn't hurt. And whatever you do TRY, TRY, TRY to keep your hands away from your face. I know it is really hard and very temptng, but it doesn't help anything.

BooBop 01-16-2003 04:04 AM

I don't know how extreme your problem is, but have you tried the JA Anti-blemish product? Tara said it works great for her.... I also have sold it to some of my teen clients and they like the results. Just a thought.

My wife got Shawn an appointment with the doctor this coming Tuesday!

Tropical Image 01-19-2003 07:24 PM

Tell him good luck!!

But please, even if the doctor advises him to go on Accutane (don't let him)!!

The affects are deadly, many young kids don't realize them and just want whatever will work, regardless of the outcome....

fungirlz 01-19-2003 08:35 PM

I agree with Laura on this Mike...
Many many teens and adults become VERY depressed when using this medication.....

Please tell your wife....Say NO to this medication..

Teens have so much stress in their lives....this seems to make it even more so......

C

BronzeBabe 01-20-2003 11:58 AM

Honestly though it depends on the person..I have been on it twice already and I have had no depression symptoms and have had known quite a few people also who have been on it with no depression symptoms either....although the medication is harsh..what is a person like myself and so many others suppossed to do if nothing else on the market works??

Anything.....

Your lucky that you haven't had any negative affects... but sometimes they don't show until a few years after you stop using the medication...

my boyfriend used this medication when he was 15... it helped clear up his acne....

but now he is 21 years old and suffers from permanent red skin... all over his face... granted he is still a great lookin guy but still its not worth the risks....

p.s i nicknamed him "Fire Face" lol hehe

fungirlz 01-21-2003 08:22 PM

Retin-A is a wonderful topical medication.but you must avoid the Sun when using it......

CHUNN 01-28-2003 08:18 PM

Shawn went to the Doctor last week and he prescribed a topical solution. ERYTHROMYCIN

fungirlz 01-28-2003 09:23 PM

ITs called ProActive Solution...

fungirlz 02-03-2003 07:02 PM

this can be very aggressive on some skin types..
if you are having problem skin it is best to have a professional evaluate your condition..

Tropical Image 02-03-2003 07:19 PM

i've never tried proactive... i would also agree get shawn to the dermo asap...

CarSmithUGA 02-04-2003 03:16 PM

Hi,
Sorry for budding into this topic but I found it interesting. I am a 16 y/o male and I have moderate acne (mostly red marks on cheeks from old acne, but I am constantly breaking out on my forehead.) I have dry cheeks, but an EXTREMELY oily forehead and nose.. I am currently using Carleys (2% BP cleanser).. my question.. some people say that tanning beds can make clog pores.. Is this true? Thanks so much!!!

fungirlz 02-04-2003 03:59 PM

A tanning unit can not clog your pores.
remember Benzoyl Peroxide will dry out the skin as will ultra violet..... be sure you are only tanning your face a bit. use units that have facials in them so you can turn off the face after a few minutes...

If your skin is very over active.. have your parents take you to the doctors... a little topical medication can improve the skin quickly..
It's nice to have you with us here on Tan Talk..

By the way Shawn.. how is your treatment working for you??

C

CarSmithUGA 02-04-2003 05:25 PM

fungirlz,
thanks for the response! yea I have been to 3 derms and put on: benzaclin, benzamycin, differin, retin-a, cleocin t, desowen.. everything but Accutane(I dont want to go on it)..
but anyways, BP does make you sun sensitive? In the summers I not only go to a tanning salon, but I also spend many hours outside at the pool, beach, sports.. all sunscreens I use break my skin out! do you know of any good ones? Thanks again!!!!

Tropical Image 02-06-2003 12:07 PM

Shawn,
how are the results with the medication from the dermo?

Just read this and hope chunn has made an appointment for his son. Self esteem is very important to a young adult and it should be taken very seriously. My son who is now 12 had bad acne at age 9. We took him to the derm and put him on topical cream. We also tried proactive. It was the best product ever for his skin. They send it by mail every 8 weeks and charge my card $40. My sons face looks great and he thinks he is handsome again. How is Shawn's face doing?

CHUNN 02-09-2003 01:48 PM

It's looking somewhat better.

fungirlz 02-09-2003 02:56 PM

"In the summers I not only go to a tanning salon, but I also spend many hours outside at the pool, beach, sports.. all sunscreens I use break my skin out! do you know of any good ones?"

Look for a SPF that has no scent to it..
MD Formulations makes an SPF of 20 that is made just for the face.. this is a product we give to all skin care treatment guests who are going through a series of treatments for the face with us..

Allergy tested and fragrance free..
Dermatogist tested
non-comedogenic is very important for sensitive skin ....

shawnchunn 02-14-2003 11:15 PM

Well fungirlz, I don't really use sunscreen. If I burn, well then, life sucks for me. Vut my medicine is helping alot. The derm. said that we should see results appearing in about 6 weeks, It has only been 2 and it is looking tons better. I can tell cause I look closely at my face.

shawnchunn 02-14-2003 11:22 PM

Dad asked tro put some pics of my face on the internet and I said no. I would be embarresed.

Amy McCord 02-15-2003 10:27 AM

I wish I would have known about this post earlier - I have not been on-line much lately.
I started seeing a dermatologist when I was 12 years old. I have tried everything - Differin, Cleocin T, Erythomycin (topical & oral), Monocycline, every strength of Retin-A (even the strongest available-VERY HARSH). I took Acutane 1 1/2 ago. It is a very aggressive drug-there are many different opinions on this. I took it orally twice a day. It is suggested to take for a 3 month period or a 5 month period. I actually took it for almost 6 months. The side effects are not the greatest. I had nose bleeds, very dry eyes, VERY dry skin. Accutane can actually make your brain begin to swell if taken more than 5-6 months. I did have severe migraine headaches towards the end. I will say - Even with all the side effects, I could not have been happier with the results.

Amy McCord 02-15-2003 10:33 AM

Shawn - You will be more sensitive to the sun. When I was 14, I was using Retin-A and no one told me that. My family went to Myrtle Beach for a week-I fried on the first day!! My face was so burned, I could not go out into the sun for the rest of the week. I was miserable. You really need to consider using a sunscreen this summer if still on the medication.
Also, remember, any cleanser that you use on your face . . .Try to make sure it does not dry out your face dramatically. If you have oily skin and you use a cleanser that makes your skin very dry and "tight", your face thinks it is too dry and will actually begin to produce even more oil to replenish it. It can become a vicious circle.
My 12 year old son has a problem with acne. I have him take Vitamin E orally twice a day and it helps some.
Before starting anything new, I would ask your dermatologist. Sometimes a combination of different ointments or medicines can cause an irritating effect.
I wish you the best of luck!!

Amy McCord 02-15-2003 10:37 AM

Also, try to be patient. Many times you will not notice an improvement in your skin until you have been using an ointment, cream, etc. for up to 6 weeks. I have actually used products that have made my skin look worse before getting better (such as Retin A). It is easy to get frustrated. It is worth the wait tho!!
