We hear so much in advertisings and write ups these days about Free Radicals…
But what exactly are these Free Radicals?
The real name is Reactive Oxygen Species.

Remember basic Chemistry atoms, molecules and electrons?? This always fascinated the heck out of me..
Well.. anyway, atoms or molecules with an unpaired electron makes them really really unstable and reactive. The oxygen molecule is necessary for the organisms survival…this molecule is the main producer of free radicals in the body..
Internally free radicals are made by metabolic reactions. … but externally (on our skin) they are the result of pollution, unhealthy life style, including( drugs, non prescription as well as prescribed), alcohol, soda pops, caffeine, and environment such as weather conditions, uv radiation and pesticides….. there is probably others I’m forgetting here.. but you get the general idea…. Follow here?
Our ability to protect our skin naturally lessens with age.. Free radicals are blamed for being the major cause of our aging process as they are the most active compound in the aging process..… The result of these radicals is cellular damage.. They damage our DNA which is our cellular membrane and the connective tissue in our dermis and decreases the elasticity.. They really attack our collagen. And we need our collagen to keep the skin pliable and smooth and firm…
So this is what I say to Free Radicals.. ……..

In a little bit we will look at Free Radical Scavengers.. Why they are in products and what kind we need!!!
Better known as Anti-oxidents…

Thanks C, I love these topics you keep coming up with. It is so nice to have someone of your education on the skin to help us learn and understand this.

DNA is not our cellular membrane. Cell membranes are cellular membranes.

DNA is the stuff INSIDE the cell membranes and INSIDE the nuclear membranes. It is the key to life. Your DNA tells every single cell in your body what to do, when to divide, when to repair itself, when to die, etc....

DNA gives you 2 eyes, 2 ears, 2 kidneys, hair color, eye color, etc. DNA is what is passed onto offspring which is why your children have some of the same traits that you do.

Damaged DNA can result in uncontrolled cell division (read=CANCER), a whole score of genetic diseases, and many other more mundane health problems.

Just wanted to clarify.

Chica, thanks for the science lesson. I think we all know what Chris was saying. I am sure you never make any grammar mistakes or contextual errors. We are not all teachers. Have you read any of S~~~~'s posts? Now there is some fodder for your new found criticism.
Just to clarify.

What's the deal? This starts out to be a really good thread fungirlz started. I really learn alot from her posts, she is so smart. And as I'm reading and there is all this BS from NJ, fixing punctuation errors and runing a perfectly good subject. I think we all knew what she meant. I think we are all adults that know a little about the tanning industry, not 1st grade students! Who is this NJ anyway, another industry professional?
