Rep Power: 28 | Chris, you could type it in Microsoft Word, spell chck and then copy to tantalk. It is very easy. ps, I am thrilled with the education you are freely giving us. I copy to Microsoft spell check and then save and print this stuff. Cause I am having my staff read it as well. And I can go back and re-read it as often as it takes to sink in my hard head. _________________ Proud supporter of Don's Army Mitzi Tancun Bound[ This Message was edited by: Mitzi on 2002-11-21 13:53 ] |

Rep Power: 24 | Our skin is an awesome multi-purpose organ that is very complex. More has been discovered about the way our skin functions and how its structure and components work in the last ten years than in our entire history. The skin is still not completely understood.. but as Chemists gain more knowledge into this complex organ they are able to design and create products that not only enhance the beauty of the skin but create products that help restore, repair and prevent damage to the skin. Brief over view of the skin.. this is a subject we could spend days on.. but I promise I won’t.. The part of the skin that we can see with our eye is made up of a conglomeration of dead cells. (this is the where we apply we apply our cosmetics, crèmes, serums and lotions. Underneath the surface literally 100s of functions take place over three very thin layers made up of different structures and tissues. Fascinating stuff going on here.. The three layers are called the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis. Our Epidermis varies in thickness from about a 1.6 mm which would be on the bottom of our feet to about a 0.04 mm on our eye lids…. The 2nd layer of our skin is the dermis which is connected to the epidermis, by what we call the basement membrane. The dermis is about 6 or seven times thicker than the epidermis.. it is comprised of collagen, elastin, connective tissues, blood vessels nerve ending and it also houses our immune system and our lymphatic system. A whole lot is going on in this level of our skin. Our 3rd skin layer is the hypodermis.. it is the deepest layer of our skin. In this layer we find mostly connective tissues and fatty tissues .. This layers thickness depends on the individual’s area of the body being evaluated because of the fat content of each individual. Each layer plays a key role in ingredients and a products performance. Let me see if I can find a picture of our skin as it looks inside and post it here for you to look at the layers and see for yourself how interesting this structure is put together.. It is good to know how this structure is working so we can better see how a product works in relationship to the different skin types… Follow where we are going here? Let me try to get us that picture on here.. C |

Now let us begin to look at products and what they include..and how they work with our skin.. Note: isn't it amazing the skin and all it does for us???? Take a few moments and really view the pictures.. now look at your own skin.. get close to it.. Amazing isn't it.. I LOVE THIS SO MUCH.. C I'll be back to post later.. Now go look at your skin.. |

Rep Power: 24 | Good Morning Everyone: I trust everyone ha a nice Friday night …….. Today we are going begin to look at the terms used and definitions. Let’s begin with some that have a tendency to fool us.. Active Ingredient: This term is used and also sometimes seen by the name.... Active Principle: This means it is an ingredient with a “treatment value” it is therapeutic or beneficial in toning the skin, or healing the skin or soothing it or peeling the skin.... Active Ingredients will be listed as such…….. example: I just grabbed a couple of products from my daughters counter I see a skin crème she uses 3 times a week…. reading the label In bold letters it says Active Ingredient: Benzoyl Peroxide 5%.. then a heading… Other Ingredients than a list continues…… another one a face wash Again we see Active Ingredient: Salicylic Acid 2%….. Then another list titled Ingredients, and a new list continues.. (Follow?) ….. We need to be aware of active ingredients … knowing what ingredients are listed on the label is good but knowing what they do is very important to us.. We can better help our guests and ourselves pick which one is right for us when we know what it is that we are about to put on our skin. Agree? Now go check out a few products on your shelves…..or in your cabinets, see how many have an active ingredient.. Lets do one more this morning …… OK? Acid: when an acid is used in a cosmetic formulation it is there to neutralize the substance which otherwise maybe would be too alkaline. A lot of acids are also in a product to exfoliate the skin or used to peel the skin such as an AHA.. (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) ……a property like hyaluronic acid has its own thing going on example : Hyaluronic acid holds water so tightly in our cells it almost becomes like a gel..( certain acids will be a very very low percentage rate in some of the products) it’s important we see where they fall on with the listed ingredient print out on the labels. Acids are used these days so much in products for our skin we see them in virtually 4 out of 10 products on the skin care market.. We will explore some of the acids listed on labels later on.. but for now it is important you understand that it is there in the product to neutralize it. Remember crèmes, gels and lotions with a low acid level will be very irritating to the skin.. ( this is why it will peel the skin or exfoliate it).. The word Acid is used to refer to the pH level of the substance ranging from 0 for the highest acidic substance to around a 6.9 for the least acidic. Go see if you have products containing Acids.. AHAs.Betas.. it will be listed on the label.. It will surprise you how much these are being used these days.. This is what we were talking about before about Dermo-Cosmetics and Cosmeceuticals bridging the gap between pharmaceuticals and cosmetics… Have a great day…… We will talk more later..
