I have looked at the faces of bewilderment when a guest is trying to read the back of a label of a product.. I myself have stood there and shook my head wondering what the heck some of the words are and what exactly these ingredients do…and why a chemist put them into the product.
Allurd Publishing Corp..publishes a great magazine called Cosmetics and Toiletries and has been a great reference to me. Now is a great time for new developments in the cosmetic industry…….. Guests are more aware that some marketing claims are not true..and they want answers as well as results.. I am glad consumers are asking more questions and looking for the answers. That is why I feel we need to know what the heck we are talking about to our guests when explaining a product. Lets first look at three different kinds of products.., First there is Cosmetics.. ( lotions for tanning are classified in this category). Next there is Pharmaceuticals ( these are products that penetrate into the dermis.. technically we should not use the word penetrate rather “absorbed” is a better term.) We know that that ingredients that remain on the surface of the of the skin are refered to as ones that penetrated… so I think when talking about a pharmaceutical crème or lotion we should say it absorbs..(Follow?) New break troughs in cosmetic chemistry has brought forth a new category in products called Dermo-cosmetics. Cosmetics and ingredients in cosmetics seem to be bridging a big gap between pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.. Another word I am hearing a lot these days in our industry relating to these products that bridge the gap is cosmeceuticals. These are the same type of products or ingredients that have a higher performance rate in results. This is what Eric develops in his treatment line of skincare products. At this time it is not real clear from a regulatory stand point is if it’s the performance or the penetration of these products.. So they are in class all to themselves. Now that we understand the three different kinds of products on the market we can now begin to discuss whats in them and what makes them work..and who they will work for.. C Eric.. want to expound on cosmeceuticals for us? [ This Message was edited by: fungirlz on 2002-11-20 08:14 ] |

I get it sent to us.. but If you go on line Mitzi to Allurd Publishing you can probably order it right over the net.
One more point I forgot to mention here.. Since the purpose of a product is to benefit the skin and help in its performance… It is important to understand how our skin works and how the product may or maybe not work on an individual. Its not a benefit for us to just discuss the ingredients or a product with-out relating it to how our skins functions with the properties of a crème or lotion.. Agree? C |

Good Morning Everyone:
We felt we needed to understand the structure and Components of our skin to really fully understand the ingredients of a product and why or why not it may work for us or our guests. Let’s look at the structure of our skin for a bit… With-in one square inch of our skin ranging from 1mm to about 4 mm in thickness there are about 650 sweat glads..about 65 hair folicals..about 19 yards of capillaries,78 yards of nerves near a thousand nerve endings and sesory cells and our Langerhan cells that are for immunological protection…and if that is not enough the skin also contains our melanoncye cells along with our tyrosinase enzymes that are responsible for producing the melanin that gives us our freckles and pigmentation. All of this is found in one square inch of our skin about the thickness of a few sheets of paper!!! Ok.. go ahead and say it.. WOW!!!! This has always fascinated me to no end. Housed in this complex structure are two types of glands .. our oil glands and our sweat glands.. the ducts of our oil glands open into the upper part of our hair follicles.. most of the time there is only one oil gland per follicle but at times there could be more.. Oil glands are found in almost every part of our skin but mostly the number is high on the face chest and back.. the soles of our feet and our palms of our hands have none. The sebum is our lubrication and helps prevent moisture loss. If an individual has a lack of oil secretion their skin will be dry. ( We talked about this before)… Sweat glands are all over the entire body. We have many many sweat glands on our forehead, under our arms and on the soles of our feet.. Dirt or cloggs in our pores occur in our hair follicles.. remember the glad begins as a coiled duct through the epidermis..and exits through the follical... Some people think sweating is a way of cleansing our skin.. Not true.. Some think going into a Sauna cleans the pores.. not true… The skins pH is known as the protective mantle..it is formed by many things.. Natural perspiration and oils. The pH of our skin should be between a 4.4 and a 5.6. Now how do products help enhance the “beauty” and function of our skin?? [ This Message was edited by: fungirlz on 2002-11-21 06:29 ] |

Understanding that Chris has a method here in this educational topic. I have been with her a long time and I always have a tendency to want to skip ahead into the advanced part of the session. I know where she is going with the ground work of these posts so if you just hang in there you will see how this will come together when we start to talk about the ingredients. A few years ago I use to try to rush her and say, well what about this or that and attempt to get to the point, but I learned she will go at the speed she feels she needs to drive home the value of the point. There is really a method to her madness with education and I for one am thrilled she is trying to bring us this information on line here. Julie |

I am excited to have this info again. I learned alot of stuff in beauty school but that was before most of you were born and we know so much more now. Thanks, Chris, for taking time to help us all.
