Our local morning news show has a variety of professional sorts that come on each day and take calls and answer questions related to their area. Well, this morning was a Skin Care specialist. Specifically, a PA from a Derms office. Anyway, someone called looking for advice to help with an extreme dry skin problem. The advice given started out ok. I'd never heard it before but I could almost accept it. Then it went down hill, fast. The following was his answer....

"Put lotion on within 3 minutes after getting out of the shower. The lotion is to keep the water from your shower on your skin. If you put it on within 3 minutes the lotion will form the barrier needed to keep the water on your skin. It doesn't matter what lotion you use, you could even use Crisco. The key is to get it on within 3 min. Some people think that drinking more water is the answer but it will do nothing to help your dry skin."

I swear the man said it was ok to use Crisco on your skin! My mouth hit the floor when I heard that one. He went on to say that they recommended no particular product at all, just use something after your shower.

Now, I do have a question about his theory on putting lotion on when still damp from the shower... Does this do any good or is it as much baloney as his Crisco idea?

Was that the buttery flavor or regular.. ..

I have heard of Crisco as a mosture balm for after a very serious face peel..

It is because it is vegetable base... but I wouldn't think unless the skin is in need of healing due to a burn or wound this thick lard would be the choice I would make..

To answer about leaving the skin damp before putting on your moisture..
????????? It would seem that it is just adding more water to your moisturizer ...( I am sure the PA had a reason for saying this... I would have liked to hear the reason behind the advice)...

We never encourage people to go to bed with their hair wet.. damp hair sticking to the back and having the pillow case wet or damp all night..can create a fungus, on the skin or scalp. Remember bacteria likes warm moist damp places...

He explained his reason. He stressed the key is to get your lotion on quickly, after the shower, while your skin is still damp. He said that the lotion acts as a barrier that will keep the skin damp longer. This is why he said what you use doesn't matter, since the water from the shower is doing the moisturizing, and the lotion is just keeping it there.

I wondered, if there is any truth to this, if I was to use a good product, right after my shower, would I be doing "double duty" so to speak? I currently put on lotion after my shower, but not within minutes.

I highly recommend not drying off after a shower...and then using a good quality moisturizer while skin is still damp. My preference is Glimra's Maximum Hydration. I tell any clients willing to listen to try this also...works very well and your lotion goes further. Great feedback. Try it.

I must, however, strongly disagree with the statement that drinking more water doesn't do any good. I'd love to read this person's credentials. I always recommend drinking lots of water, for a variety of reasons.

When I first moved to Colorado 16 years ago I developed some very dry skin. I had always lived in humid climates and wasn't sure what to do. A friend told me about putting lotion on right after a shower. It works! I just pat myself dry and lather on lotion. Without that process my skin would get dry and chalky looking.

And, I agree with Tamar, drinking water WILL help in keeping the skin hydrated. (among many other good things)

I would never use crisco simply becasue of the greasy texture. Too many other choices out there.

I have been taught the 'moisturize while damp' theory since my beauty school days. Seems to work for me. I was taught that since moisture is the key and oils are not moisture they only serve to hold in moisture that is already there. I am open to new info but definitely not Crisco.

How about Pam Spray?? how would this measure up to Crisco... Low in Fat...buttery taste...easy non stick formula???
