Soo - if you gorge on all those foods and juices mentioned previously, and are WORRIED about UVR doing something bad to your DNA:

FILTER out the 300-335nm. In a tanning bed use old solarized acrylic. Outdoors wait until 4:15 pm (summer) when these wavelengths have receded.

OR - buy a GIANT piece of Schott WG335 glass which blocks everything below 335nm and cover yourself with it.

Don't expect much melanin stimulation from the remaining 336-400nm rays tho!

In the information about celery, I read that grocery store employees who handle the vegetables had reactions just from touching the celery and moving it around. That's why there is a regulation now that requires that it be in plastic bags. So, you don't even have to ingest it.

I just want to know if this uncontrolled cell division which causes this boosted tanning ever goes wrong. Theoretically it would always hit those particular codons on the DNA strand... but DNA makes mistakes, even when we're not talking about mutagenic substances.

Chris, maybe you can ask Don about this. He won't get involved with this because I'm here and I'm TROUBLE.

NJ you are no trouble when you are giving us cold scientific fact like this..... I am very uneducated in the science area and need all the info you can give. I wouldn't even have a clue as to how to research this.

Now on the other hand if you want me to tell you about volume, square root or what colors do to the subconsious.....I can help you out.

Chica/Christine:

1. Psoralens were used (by the dermatology community) at one time to "enhance" the tanning process.

2. The leaves of the "Ammi majus" plant was, according to legend, chewed by Cleopatra to help her achieve the dark and sexy look she used to seduce Marc Anthony (and her two brothers whom she married!).

3. We now know that 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP), when "activated" by UVR, causes "cross-linking" of the DNA that is mutagenic (cancer producing). [Note: Research shows that UVR in conjunction with 8-MOP can "inactivate" the AIDS virus in Blood Bank blood.]

4. Whether or not the psoralens in food will also cause "cross-linking and, therefore, become mutagenic when exposed to UVR is not known. It is known that exposure to UVR after ingesting these foods lowers your tolerance to UVR with regards to sunburning (or, raises your sensitivity to UVR if you prefer to look at it from this side of the equation).

5. Some people become more sensitive to UVR (have less tolerance to UVR) when they ingest certain foods or drugs but most do not.

6. The "bottom line" is that people who become more sensitive to UVR (less tolerant) when they ingest certain foods and/or drugs would, IMHO, be better off to avoid UVR (inside or outside) after they ingest these substances to be safe.

Hope this helps.
