Rep Power: 27 | Page 100 of Real Simple magazine, Clear Pores... Problem: Clogged pores-called blackheads when the pores are stopped up with sebum(oil) and open to the air; whiteheads, when the clogged follicles are under the skin. Solution : Evacuate the excess sebum to banish blemishes and play down pores. At Home: Glop on some unwhipped eff yolk, let it dry, then rinse. "The vitamin A in the yolk acts like a retinoid to reduce pore size and reduce the pustules," says Mary Ellen Brademas, a New York City dermatologist. The effect has about five days. Try a cleanser with alpha hydroxy acids. (AHAs), like Alpha Hydrox Foaming Face Wash ($8) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), like Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser ($6). It will slough away dead skin cells that clog pores. At The Spa: Get a facial. Professional aestheticicans are allowed to do something you're not: pick. A lot of people squeeze so hard that the sebum spreads and cause inflammation. Aestheticians have a lighter touch: They pad their fingers with paper or cloth, put hear or lotion on the skin to soften it, then gently squeeze. Sometimes they use a fine needle or a little tool called a comedo extractor. Bonus: They use products with higher concentrations of AHAs or BHAs than found in over-the-counter versions. At The Dermatologist: Ask about chemical peels. Dermatologists use AHAs even more potent that those employed in spa facials. Peels not only unclog pores but can also make skin smoother and softer and treat discoloration. The effects can last up to a year. A series of visits may be required and each session can cost fro $85 to $200, for as much as $2500 total. Get a prescription. Retinoid medications, such as Retin-A and the still more powerful Accutan, keep pores clean. THE TIP: Avoid hars exfoliants, like the ones with pulverized apricot pits; they can scratch and irritate skin. Look for gentler products with calcium carbonate, like BlissLabs Middleweight Exfoliator ($29) or jojoba beads, like Orgins swept Clean ($16). Remember if using an AHA, glycolic or Beta product on the face.. be very careful tanning the skin that has had this product.. you can be ultra sensitive to the UV.. 2. "At The Spa: Get a facial. Be sure the "facialist" you are going trust do this.. is a board certified aesthetician.. Using tools on the face can create damage to the skin if it is done incorrectly.. You don't want to be left with pits and holes in your face.. 3."Ask about chemical peels. Dermatologists use AHAs even more potent that those employed in spa facials. Remember: everything nice has a price.. if you are super sensitive ask about microdermabrasion treatments. Be sure you find out which type of crystals are being used in the proceedure. 4."Avoid harsh exfoliants, like the ones with pulverized apricot pits; they can scratch and irritate skin". We've talked about this before.. I love the pineapple exfoliant.. you can use it up to 3 times a week.. Enjoy clear skin... Just be careful what you are doing to achieve it.. _________________ Christine' See You In Nashville!!!!!![ This Message was edited by: fungirlz on 2002-10-05 21:19 ] |
