So I've been doing this whole "Perricone Prescription" thing for the past two weeks or so as we get numerous emails and letters about it each week and have for quite some time now (call us late to jump on the boat, hehe). We got a FLOOD in the last three weeks due to an article about Dr. Perricone in People magazine that talked about all the movie stars that swear by this stuff. His book is called "The Wrinkle Cure" and it's got this whole anti-oxident diet and then of course recommends his skin care line.

Anyway, I digress...

It seems the reason his stuff works so well is Vitamin C Ester. I deal more on the hair/cosmetics side of things so I don't know much about skin care, but I'm reading that "Vitamin C Ester reduces the risk of irritation and inflammation in the skin whie protecting against free radical damage" (this off the product insert).

Chris or Eric, what can you tell us about Vitamin C Ester and what it really does (as opposed to these claims)? I'm curious because the products really HAVE helped my skin.

TaninCA;

The Vitamin C Ester, is considered to be a much more lipid soluble (oil) molecule than standard Ascorbic Acid which tends to be more hydroscopic (water). That being said recently there have been some that have started a trend to believe that just because the molecule penetrates the lipid membrane of the cells more freely, does not necessarily indicate improved efficacy.

I think I remember reading a while back that Vitamin C the L-ascorbic acid bioactive molecule was studied in something like approximately 100,000 clinical studies, so there is a lot more information currently to support some of the claims.

With any ingredient, especially reactive anti-oxidant compounds, preparation and proven stability in the formulation is eons more critical than any other factor. If you do not have stability in the formulation, or have not prepared in a way such that you can ensure delivery, it does not matter what ingredients you list on the label. Ink on a label is cheap, formulating quality products that work is not.

If the Perricone’s products seem to be working for you, that is fantastic, my suspicion is that you are seeing the combined effects of an entire formulation, not one ingredient.

This is a great topic…
Several studies have been done on this vitamin and on going studies are still in the making..

In 1992 Dr. James Enstrom at the University of California reported men consuming supplements and foods containing 50 mg or more of vitamin C had a 45% lower mortality rate of coronary heart disease than men getting lower the amount. Women in the study were 25% lower in their heart attack mortality rate.
This study goes on to say that men getting 300 to 400 mg per day of the vitamin may live 6 years longer than men who do not get this much..
Now ready for the kicker.. Women getting the 300-400 mgs per day may live 1 year to a year and ˝ longer than women who do not get this amount..

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joel A. Simon MD, M.P.H. said that , even after controlling for variables, Vitamin C intake remained significantly correlated with death rates…

Later we will look at what the study says about vitamin C Ester vs. vitamin C.
Including this vitamin and our skin..

Eric:
Maybe you are familiar with the study done by Sandra Goodman PHD. she found in her studies of Ester C that it absorbed into the system faster than regular vitamin C.. She says
Ester-C was absorbed with-in 20 minutes and the regular C 45 minutes..

Less side effects with the Ester also.. meaning the individuals did not get as much gas from the Ester .. .. that sounds good to meeeeeeee....

Here is the link to her website, everything done on rats orally, nothing topically.

The point that I was saying is that, a product is not necessarily as good just the claims that can be made on one ingredient.
Formulating is as much art as it is science, and understanding interelations of ingredients and how a product functions once everything is "mixed" together is the most import part of a good product.

Often times we (meaning our industry) get in the bad habit of talking about individual ingredients, this additive or that additive, and the truth is unless the entire system functions well together all you have are nice looking ingredient names on the label.

Well okay...here is the full "Rx benefits" from the product insert:

"Laureth sulfate cleanses gently but thoroughly, leaving the skin feeling fresh and cleansed. Vitamin C Ester reduces the risk of irritation and inflammation in the skin while protecting against free radical damage."

Question Eric:
If the C Ester absorbes faster than regular C other than the "gas" side effects of regular C.. what other benefits does it have?? the delivery is faster.. but does it help better???
The difference in a 50 mg bottle of regular C 200 tablets vs. 50 mg Ester C 200 tablets is about 8.00...
so other than entering the system faster and no gas (if you get gas from C) what other benefits are there to Ester C ??
