My friend phoned me.. she needs to talk...
She has been walking.. breathing STRESS VALLEY!! She has been one HUGE bundle of nerves.. Her skin the past few weeks looks tired, she's bloated in the jaw line and her eyes look like she has not slept for a week.. STRESS stinks... It takes a toll on us.. I am there for my friend.. but I don't have the answers... Sometimes it's alright to just keep your mouth shut when your friend needs you... Think on these things.. Invite her over..or out to lunch.. don't try to listen over the phone right then.. If you are like me your mind will wonder..and you will miss 1/2 of what she is telling you.. When you are listening to your friend.. really listen... If you can't meet her face to face.. make arrangements to call her back at a certain time so you can "give her 100% attention".. Listen to what your friend has to say.. Even though you feel like giving her "your advice" wait until she has gotten it all out.. Pay attention to what your friend is telling you.. and also pay attention to the way you feel about it.. When asked for advice.. offer it up slowly.. choosing your words very very carefuly... Give your friend time to think about what you are saying.. and don't over react.. Don't feel you have to "know how she is feeling"... Sometimes you don't.. it is not happening to you.. sometimes just being there and staying still and quiet is better than saying anything.. Don't talk about what has happend to you.. Remember "THEY" are in need here... If your friend is depressed stay away from alcholic beverages while talking thing through.. rather offer up a cup of comforting tea.. or a mellow juice.. Sometimes just being there with your friend can give them a vacation from the stress... My mom always said.. the mind can only hold one thought at a time.. make it a good one.. ( you would have loved my mom)... After your friend is done talking.. sit with them... remind them that we are all on a journey here in life.. and you are glad that you have met them on the path... Watch the face soften.. the eyes clear and the puffy jaw line reduce... You will know Stress took a vacation.. Love to you all this evening, C |

another great way to relax is to..... exercise! a brisk walk, a long slow jog, a bike ride, rollerblading, street hockey with the kids... 30 minutes to an hour of semi-strenuous exercise is better than any valium, xanax, whatever!!!
You can work out your frustrations, loosen up those tight muscles, get the endorphins flowing, maybe even work off that handful of chocolate you just crammed in your mouth as an immediate reaction to stress. You will feel GREAT after your cardio session. Energized, happier, stronger, relaxed... and at night you will sleep like a baby! Just remember to stretch after exercising and again before bed or you will wake up with sore muscles and that will put you in a bad mood again. |
