My mother in her neverending attempt to get me to stop tanning LOOOOOOOOOOOOVES to tell me all about her hair stylist who "looks like a freak".

I went with her today to get my hair cut and I saw that she has "lost" pigment on most of her face. The rest of it is super-tan which only makes the white areas more prominent.

a few questions:
1) What causes this? Did she really get it from tanning too much or is my mother full of it?
2) Couldn't she use a self-tanner to cover up the white areas?

Njchica,
I am answering for Chris she has a really bad cold...
here is what she says:

1.Its vitaligo.. no more pigmentation.. and it is not from too much tanning!!!

2.It cant be helped with self tanner.

3.It just happens.. we dont know why the cells do it.. it happends.. not catching.. just happends with the cells..

Maybe that should make your Mother feel better.lol Ohh lets see if Eric has anything on the subject. I will link him.

There are various reasons why we lose the ability to tan especially as we age. Generally speaking we naturally we lose approximately 6-8% melanocyte density per decade as we age. This is a natural process and occurs both in uv-exposed and non-exposed skin, but is most common on the head, face and forearms (which by the way at birth have the greatest density of melanocytes). (Ask grandma to see her butt checks; they are as white as a ghost)

In addition to the normal loss of melanocyte density as we age there are several other factors that contribute to hypo-pigmentation, or decrease color of the skin caused by a reduced amount of melanin.

Vitiligo is one, and is a condition, which causes a loss of pigment, for reasons not completely understood, and it is not known to be linked to exposure or disease. More common in women than men, Vitiligo can occur at any age, however normally appears between the ages of 10-40.

Hypo-pigmentation can also be caused by use of OTC skin lightening creams, ie, facial creams or age spot creams that contain Hydroquinone.

To quote my favorite Shrimpin’ Boat Captain, “That is all I have to say about that.”

The only other thing is to understand that with a proper skin care routine, healthy diet, lots of water, take your anti-oxidants daily, and a mindful understanding of the “everything in moderation” theory (everything in moderation except smoking that is) it is possible to have beautifully tanned healthy skin for a long time.
