I have a customer with some type of scaly skin just above her hairline on her head. She say's that excema runs in her family, but that is not what it looks like to me. She also claims that the condition comes and goes, but is more prevelant when she tans for a few days in a row.
I have advised her to see a dermatologist, but she has not insurance and does not want to spend the money. She also has been using something called "Scapilson" (I have no idea if I am spelling that correctly). She says it burns her skin and I personally don't think that could be a good thing. She says that it starts to peel in large patches (like the tip of a finger) and must be brushed from her hair which also produces more loose skin. I know this sounds gross, but I know this lady. She is not a dirty person, takes care of her skin and hair. And I don't know how to help her without really telling her to spend the money on a doctor. Any suggestions? |

Shallee,
Good to note that you immediately did the right thing by first recommending that she see a dermatologist or her doctor. This is important with skin issues that are not immediately identifiable. Scalpicin is Anti-Itch Liquid Scalp Treatment that is available OTC or (over the counter), and is available at most drug or food stores. Interesting thing with Scalpicin is that it’s active ingredient is 3% Salicylic Acid, same ingredient used in lots of OTC acne products. It can be extremely drying to the skin. While it may help with the initial itching feeling, it may actually be contributing to her long-term issues. Where did she get the idea to try that product? Remember less is sometimes more, she could be treating the symptoms (itching) and fueling the cause; who knows it could be simple dandruff, or one of the forms excema, psoriasis, or something else… We may never know, there in lies the dilemma. I think I would find out why she started with the Scalpicin? Perhaps you can recommend that she give good old Head and Shoulders a chance, with an active ingredient, I think assuming they have not changed it, of Pyrithione Zinc, and this will possibly give some relief from the dryness and scalp flaking, she is experiencing. You may tell her that it is more gentle and less drying on her scalp use like 2-3 times a week.. (Careful how you word it, no body wants to be told they have dandruff.) If she sees no improvement in 5-10 days, I would suggest that she consider forking out the cash and have someone take a look. My gut feeling tells me that she, cuts back on things that make her dry, she will see an improvement. *** Disclamer, the above comments should not be considered as a replacement for the thorough evaluation of a real board certified dermatologist. While I have been known, to play one at home when Amy is in the mood. I am not one... _________________ Eric T. I am with Eric on asking how she decided to use the Scalpicin?? I don't think people should self treat something like this...
When we do treatments with Salicylic Acid we discourage the patient not to tan or go in the sun while having the treatments or using the salicylic acid.. Do me a favor.. ask her if she has colored her hair in the recent week? IF so did she do it herself? Did she use a dye that has a matalic base? Head and Shoulders makes a shampoo for DRY scalp.. it smells nice and leaves the hair full and bouncy.. Tell her I said to use it.. say its for Dry scalp.. not dandruff...Some how people think the two are different.. ........ Do not try to figure what it is if its not from hair dye.. or a product she is using on her scalp.. ( hair spray, moose, gels can cause irritation)... If she has eliminated everything she uses to see what is causing this.. and still no results ... She needs to see a doctor.. C |

Finally saw this lady again today. She said that she was looking at the medicated shampoos and saw scalpicin sitting on the shelf, this is the only reason that she decided to try it.
I suggested to her to try Head and Shoulders, she said that her mom had suggested to her Selson Blue and that she would do one or the other in the next day or two. Here is another weird thing she did...I have sold her a few jars of JA's salt glow and she loves it on her feet and elbows. But she said that last night she decided to try it on her head, thought that it might loosen some of the skin and bring in healthier skin. She said that the salt really didn't get down to her scalp very well, but felt that maybe the oils actually helped with the itch. I really didn't respond to that, I did't know what to say. What do ya'll think? |

Why do you think it is that people ask for advice and then don't listen to a word of it?
This woman has yet to try any shampoo for dry scalp. She does not use the scalpicin at least and that may be helping. But she is still using the Salt Glow ON HER HEAD!!! She swears that this is why she is doing betther although there is still visibly dry skin and some flaking. She says that she uses the oils only (not the salt) and apply's it at night. That way she can shampoo it out the next morning. Claims also that this may be doing good things for her hair as she has very thick textured and dry hair. Crazy! I bet JA had no idea that people would use this as a hair treatment. What do I tell her? |
