I am totally allergic to my cat. Completely. The doctor even made me get bloodwork in her futile attempt to make me get rid of my cat. A normal reading is 100.

Peanut Butter~~100 not allergic at all
Dust mites~~1000 so I'm allergic to them
Dogs~~~4000 very allergic to dogs
Cats~~~6000 she was actually very worried about this number

I have severe asthma but I love my cat and there's no way in **** I'm getting rid of her. She makes me wheeze but that's what inhalers are for! She makes my eyes itchy and red (if I touch them after petting her) but that's what eyedrops are for! She makes my skin swell up into little welts if she puts her paws on my arms...

and I don't know what to do about that last one. Yesterday somehow she put her paw on my arm and hand... I had welts all over! Red, itchy, swollen, GROSS! I put a hot compress on it to speed up the histamine production. (gets the itch out for a few hours) So it wasn't itchy but it was still red and swollen and nasty. Any ideas on how to hide these kinds of allergic reactions?

The scary thing is that I actually have built up a tolerance to her. I used to be in the ER every single time I came home from college because I wasn't used to being near her all the time. yes my parents really loved that.

The only thing I can say.. is this is UNCONDITIONAL LOVE!!!

Have you asked your Doctor to see if you could maybe get on a dander blocker?

Let me go get Eric..

That's a good idea but I already take so much stuff that my mother would flip if I came home with another little orange bottle.

She was just lecturing me not 5 minutes ago about how bad it is to take Tylenol and how I will destroy my liver. Then she went off about the fact that the doctor prescribed muscle relaxers for me. I told her that I haven't even taken any of the pills. ("Count them!! There are still 60 in the bottle!!") She stated that it was better to get 2 massages a week rather than take the pills. I told her if she wanted to foot the bill, I'd be more than happy to take her advice.

Remember.. your mother is looking out for your best interest..
You only get 1 mother in this life time..and she only gets 1 you..

Lets go look under Natural Parm. and see if they can give us a clue on what to do as we wait for Erics reply..
I posted the website on this skincare forum..

Njchica,

I say lose the cat.....

Ok, that was the unsensitive, really, really dislike cats Eric....

It sounds like you and your Doctor have done your research in terms of your allergic responses. I am sure your doctor can recommend some type of histamine blocker to make your time with "mittens" more tolerable.

Remember in general allegeries tend to get worse with increased exposure not better...

From someone that also suffers from allergies, and is much happier keeping my animal exposure limited to the discovery channel... i recommend a fish tank...[ This Message was edited by: Formulated Solutions on 2002-06-15 19:01 ]

Njchica,
I too suffer from horrid allergies, ive been on every perscription out there... nothing ever works
ive been through the battery of testing 2 times over the past few years,
basically my allergist told me to #1 quit my job ( being a preschool teacher is a mucus factory he told me ) #2 move ( beacuse we have carpeting and a basement ) both of which hold allergins which i am allergic to #3 get rid of the dog ( yeah right ) #4 dont go over my boyfriends house beacuse of the cat ........ yeahhh OK.........
so he talked me into doing the ALLERGY SHOT program which usually is like a 5 year program, but they tell you that eventually you will be free of problems, BUT in my case My allergys got worse... way worse i couldnt even go into my boyfreinds house anymore, b4 shots started it was bad say if the cat was in his room and in my general vicinity, but during shots forgetit i was miserable, so i quit them..... only to be seen at an ENT doctor a few years after for severe strep throat, while i was there he noticed my allergies and had me done up for the tests, i agreed mostly to see if my allergies had gotten worse , well they had and yet again we started the shots... and again i was worse..... so i quit again....
BUT this year i started on clarinex and its made me feel pretty good so far, and clarinex is not just for seasional allergies its for indoor/outdoor which is what i need, zyrtec didnt work nearly as good as the clarinex on me...
hope you can find relief .... keep your kitty

I love my cat. LOVE HER. will never get rid of her.

and I do have a fish tank. I'm science teacher!!!! I have fish, frogs, anoles, a snake, etc...

my allergies seem to be better when I live with her full-time... at least I have some kind of tolerance to her. But, regardless, she could be slowly killing me and I still wouldn't get rid of her. hehehehe

Try to wash the kitty paws.. maybe she is using her litter box, and then she steps on you..you could get this reaction from the litter..
Try that and see if it works..

My heart goes out to you..
We have 3 kittys..and love them ......We know how you feel..
They are our family members also.
