Subj: need tanning advice
Date: 4/22/2002 6:57:39 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: kim.sabel@attbi.com To: immommy@aol.com Sent from the Internet (Details) Hello, I just read one of your posts at Tan Talk (just registered today). I am not a store owner, or even a tanner - though I want to start tanning & look hot for the summer. I've tried tanning before & got a *tiny* bit of tan, but mostly just itched like crazy & had to quit. I was tanning in a 20-minute bed, no lotions, about 7-8 mins each time. Tanned about 4 or 5 times & gave up (the itch). I've read on the site that a salon should give a skin type survey - mine did not. I am completely clueless - all the lotions/sprays/terminology/tan times, etc are confusing. They sold me a lotion for the itch & it did *nothing* to help me. I never returned. Just wondering if you'd be willing to help me determine what I should be doing to get a nice tan for the summer. Too embarrassed to leave my house - I am *white* and from Texas, where it seems everyone is tan! When I took the skin survey, I was a type 2C (borderline 3A, I think). I burn first, then tan. I think I could get fairly dark, if I pursue the right plan of lotions, tanning schedule, & bed type. I would REALLY appreciate your help!!!!! Thanks, Kim in TX |

Kim from TX,
I would like to ask a few questions.. Do you want to standup or lay down units? How much time do you have in your busy schedule that you can spare for tanning? (This info would help determine what type of bed you should be tanning in.) What kind of lotion did you use that caused you to itch? Find out what kind it was and avoid the ingredients that are in that lotions with similar ingredients. I would suggest that you start out with a base building lotion with a bronzer.. it will jump start your tanning. my personal Fav to build a base tan for your skin type would be California Tans' "Ambrosia Dark Deluxe". In a basic base bed (28-32 lamp unit)it will take a minimum of 7-10 visits to get a great base tan (Tanning every other day within a 14-21 day period of time) an monthly(30 Day) package might be a good option for you ..If you tan fast then small visit package may work for you as well. Increasing the minutes per session gradually until you reach the maximum time allowed in that bed. At which time I would suggest you upgrade to a larger bed (With facials or more facial lamps then are in the base beds) which will allow you to finish off the base tan with a boost of color. This type of bed will also have a reduce session time...Usually. And Maintaining the tan will be easier and less visits weekly required to maintain your new found color, in these type of beds. Unless of course you enjoy a 20 minute nap..I do at a times..hehehe Now about your skin.. You really should follow the tips found in the skin care forum to maintain health skin tanned or not. A great After Tan lotion will help in maintaining your tan inbetween appointments. I and many other salon owners are very impressed with the new Moisturizer/After Tan from California Tan..TOTAL IMMERSION. Well That is all I have for now.. Hope this gets you started ....OH and ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION!! I am sure you knew that. Mj _________________ Tan Talk ModeratorTanTalk Rocks!!! Some people have mild itching after the 3 session, I tend to get it if I have not tanned in a long while. It is from the effects of uv light and the heat and slight drying of your skin, I find it goes away in about 24 hours and not uncomfortable at all.
Moisturize your skin. I get the same effect when tanning out side. |

Thanks, Chris, for posting this to the board. I didn't think I could post here unless I was a salon owner, or worked at one. One look at me, and you'll know I'm not either!!! haha.
MJ - thanks for the reply. To answer your question, I have never tried a stand-up unit, but I believe I'd prefer a bed (I like the nap - although for me it is a quick one, since I can't stay in long!). Also, I have a flexible schedule & time to work on my tan, and am not in a terrible hurry - although I'd like to see a noticeable change within 2 or 3 weeks. I would like to leave my house & feel good, ya know? The lotion I used didn't cause the itching, but they sold it to me to help relieve it (caused by the tanning). I wasn't using any other moisturizing lotions or tanning lotions (bad, I know). I have naturally dry to medium-moisture skin. The lotion was called "Body Drench" and it did very little to help the itching. It was unbearable. I thought I had caught a skin disease from the bed, but after a good 36 hours, the itching would go away. Chipp, I had heard that if you just keep going, it goes away, so I tried to hang in there. But every time I went, it just seemed to get worse - the itching more severe & would last longer. Putting on moisturizer would help for about 20 minutes. I couldn't reapply that often - I've got other things to do! I really wanted a tan, but I just couldn't stand it. Anyway - if you or anyone else has more tips on how to tan without suffering so much, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!!![ This Message was edited by: kgirl on 2002-04-23 12:03 ] |

As for the Itch, I agree with Chippp. Normally when you first begin to tan your skin is getting primmed for the melanin to surface. Also, the itching will begin between the second and fifth tanning session,. This will subside, unless you are using something that is irratating your skin. Most likely you will get over the itchy feeling. You just gave up to quickly.

There is no reason you can't build a fairly good base tan in 2 -3 weeks! If you walked into my salon tomorrow this is what I would recommend:
30 day package, tan every 48 hours starting at 8 minutes (or so). Go up by two minute increments (as long as there is no pink or red) until reaching the max of 20. Use a good base building lotion such as Definitely Dark by Emerald Bay or even HP2000's Tan Maximizer, depending on your budget. The itching could be from dry skin, exfoliate with a loofah and gel/liquid soap (Glimra's Maximum Hydration Body Wash) before tanning, every week or so. I personally haven't experienced a tanner's itch, but they (the veterans here) says it happens. It COULD also be tingle lotion residue left on the acrylic. Take a wet washcloth and wipe the bed down before your session if necessary. Use a good moisturizer after your shower, such as Glimra's Maximum Hydration Lotion. Avoid bar soaps. Check your laundry detergent, too. Drink lots of water. What part of Texas are you in? Pm me if you like. From what you've told us, I'd almost recommend another salon. |

Hey Kim, I see you are from Dallas. I make several trips there as it is closer than some of the other large cities that may sponser training or seminars related to this industry.
I have found that some people are sensitive to the sanizer used to clean the beds. For people that complain of sever itching a see if it could be the lotion or I will spray the beds with clean water AFTER sanitzing the bed just to rinse off some of the irritating ingrediants to those with sensitive skin. Perhaps this will help you as well. The Ambrosia is an excellent lotion. I would also suggest Melaplus as long as your skin will have no problem with nut oils. This is an excellent product for both moiturizing and accelerating. Also you may want to start out getting your skin in shape before you actually start tanning. Use tons of good moisturizer within three minutes after showering, this will help to lock in moisture from the shower. Or read "Exfoliating your way to a healthier tan" in this forum. http://www.tantalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=2323120&forum=38&23 shallee |
