Chris,

Actually I live in maryland. I do not know if this is a regulated state or not. However I do not go to that salon anymore. I know I am not the only person she has let use this either because shse sells her own little "hot mix" which is what she gave me to use. I am aware that the salon I was going to was not a quality salon thats why I stopped going.

Years ago I used to drench myself in baby oil and iodine then go all day to Padre Island. I too would come home looking like a different race. Loved it then.

I am from TX, we are regulated and I am licenced and certified, but I have not heard anything about baby oil other than it could damage my very expensive equipment.

Please know that I no longer use this practice. However, I didn't know it was actually harmful to myself or others. Please expand on this.

shallee

Oil & water doesn't mix...baby oil, as we are specifically discussing here, creates a barrier that will not let your skin pull moisture back in to rehydrate.

A customer of ours discussed this issue today. She has been tanning off & on for many years and was considering giving it up because her skin was getting dryer. She blamed it on tanning (does use tanning lotion). When she explained that she uses baby oil faithfully as a moisturizer after her shower I told her to put it away forever and explained why. She caught on immediately and couldn't believe what she's been doing to herself all of these years. The oil may feel nice on top of the skin, but does not add moisture as she so desperately needs right now. I told her an order of Glimra's Max Hydration would be arriving in the next day or two, and she'll be back to buy it.

This simple statement sums it all up..
You'll never be smooth, supple..soft by using baby oil..
Drop a bit in a glass of water.. it will not mix..it floats.. the molecule to too large to penetrate our skin..

Find a moisturizer made especialy for indoor tanners.. Thee are several wonderfuls out on the market. Baby oil is not one of them..

Keep up the good postings and great advice..

Love to all..

OH MY!!! I haven't been on this post for a bit. ROFLMAOWPIMP @ Jim, Tamar, Chippp and Tangirl. Jim enjoys the silence from Chris on the rare occasion, Tamar has blown her roof off laughing, Chippp admits he needs to LAY down, and Tangirl calls her mom "smartypants" Too funny.
Now back to the b-oil and iodine. Geez, this practice is truly bad for our industry. And like many of you, I too did this in my younger days at the lake. Learned it from MY Ms. SmartyPants

This is for little Ms. Smartypants. Yes, Tamar, I'm talking about you.

Funny how our past can come back to help us in a totally new way. I learned oil & water doesn't mix in the automotive industry, made a good living off of folks that thought they could.

Most favorite tale relevant to this thread: young man has his brand new small size pick up towed in, engine is locked up. We take a peek and can see immediately the engine has sucked water up. What happened? He says he was cruising up and down the beach, in and out of the shallow water, just like the truck in the TV commercials, next thing you know, engine dies...

Moral of the story: don't believe everything the big guys tell you.

I'm glad you moved this topic up Tamar..
This week-end I had the opportunity to see two young woman in their 20s drenching themselves in a mixture of Iodine and babyoil out at the beach..!!! My Lord!
It took every ounce of me not to go over to them and dump the stuff out.
I offered NO advice.because they were drinking beers..and I thought better than to walk over and offer up advice.

This is so bad for their skin..and I could tell they were going to be too fried that evening to have any funzzz at all.

With ALL the information out in the public these days why in the world would 2 SMART young people still do such a thing to themselves???
