Miliaria

I. Definition:

"Prickly heat" or miliaria is a common rash caused by sweat retention.

II. Causes:

Prolonged exposure to perspiration can lead to plugging of the sweat ducts. This results in the duct breaking open and the escape of sweat below the skin which causes the rash known as miliaria.
Heat and humidity are factors involved in the cause of miliaria.

III. Treatment:

The key to treating miliaria is to avoid excessive heat and humidity.
Wearing loose cotton clothing will help prevent miliaria.
Cool baths and air conditioning are very helpful.
Tend Skin is an effective treatment for this condition.
Some patients find that using a bath brush with soap to exfoliate the skin will decrease the occurrences of this condition.
If you have a severe case of miliaria the doctor will give you a prescription lotion to apply to the rash.

This is an uncomfortable condition, but it does go away, and is not long term..

Thanks Chip for this post.

I can't quite figure out if this is what is happening to me.

I've been tanning for YEARS. Never had any problems, I tan really easily.

Now I am starting to get what LOOKS like heat rash (red, itchy, and bumpy) in the same places each time I tan: left elbow, right shin, and a small bit on my chest near my cleavage.

It seems to me that it's only in places that touch the bed, but that doesn't make any sense because then wouldn't my back and stomach and everything else that touches the bed get it too?

I can't imagine it's heat rash because I feel cool the entire time and don't sweat at all.

The only thing I can think of is perhaps I am allergic to the cleaning agent, but that doesn't make sense either based on where I DON'T get the rash - tailbone, backs of legs, etc.

Any ideas? I am familiar with "tanner's itch" which I get occassionaly on my legs and stomach (I moisturize and it stops) and this doesn't seem to follow the same pattern. It's not quite to the "infuriating" stage yet but it's getting close - I don't WANT to stop tanning!

Are you using anything with a fragrance in these areas?
Maybe left over perfume/ scented lotion from the day you missed washing off before your session?

Chris:

The acrylic "shield" that the client lies on is "porous" and the active ingredients from SOME (one in particular!) "tingling" lotions appears to get into the "pores" of the acrylic and can affect the next tanner. We forbid the use of this particular lotion in our salons but since we can't be certain that someone didn't have it in their purse and used it, we have started "double cleaning" our sunbeds in order to prevent this problem from ever occuring (double cleaning seems to remove any residue of the "tingling" ingredient).

Hope this helps.

Don

We had a "rash" of itching not too long ago and now use a wet washcloth to wipe down the beds after our usual sanitizing procedure. Seems to have taken care of the issue.

I am going to try wiping the bed down myself with a Lever 2000 wipe (I carry them in my tanning bag in case I use a bronzer). We'll see if that helps.

Okay, I've decided maybe it is heat rash because I realized today that it's acompanied by a prickly feeling on my skin.

What can I do to combat this and still be able to tan?

And why NOW? How come I never had this problem years ago when I began tanning?

Check ingredients, may leave an undesirable film on acrylic.

Do they have a stand up machine at the studio you tan at?
If they do try going in there a few times and see if you still have the reaction..
If you don't then you know it is something on the bed that is causing the rash.

Keep us updated.
