Eric,

Bath and Body Works recommends you buy their Base Oil made of almond and jojaba oil and then add their "absolute" which are tiny bottles of scent (essential oil?) that say, "Lavender, diluted in carrier oil".

Is your professional chemist advice to skip this deal and just buy essential oils? Was your PM on olive oil real or a joke?

I may be off base here, but isn't it better to purchase your bath oils, lotions etc... in a professional tanning salon???

We all know that some ingredients in products off the shelves of stores will inhibit our tanning process.

Brenda,

I am surprised to hear about BBW.. I thought that when they first introduced the line that they were using true essential oils.. Perhaps a liability issue because some essential are not good if used directly on the skin without dilution. Jojoba and sweet almond are ok as carriers, but I like grape seed, olive and squalene better. I am not sure I buy into the "essential in carrier oil" nonsense... chances are it is an inexpensive filler oil and is only padding the intimate brands profit margin.

Your best bet is probably a health food store in your area that may carry the raw essential oils...ideally for topical application depending on which oils you are using, you should be at 2-3% essential to carrier ratio meaning 2 drops of essential for ever 98 drops of carrier. Don’t use them directly on the skin, despite the name “essential oils” most essentials are not oils at all, but rather are more closely related to alcohols with significantly higher evaporation rates as compared to the carriers. Actually we have a pretty nice assortment of essentials at the office I will skim a little off the top for you and send a nice sampling of the goods.

As you probably guessed part of the PM was a joke, but the part about the Virgin Olive oil base was not.. Olive oil is an excellent source for several key amino acids as well as a good source for lipid soluble anti-oxidants including Vitamin E.

The biggest question about home formulating of bath oils is whether you want the oil film or if you are looking for the emulsified (blooming) version. With out the right emulsification system, all you have is an oily film on the top of the water that smells nice, and feels good on the skin on the surface of the water and certainly leaves a ring on the tube.

We make a private label lavender and eucalyptus blooming foot soak for a customer, next time we run, I will save you a sample. This version blooms or makes the water look cloudy and gives the entire bathwater the soft emollient rich feel. I have used the foot soak in the bath myself and it is pretty nice. I’ll trade you for some Viewkeepers

Buntanner, Princess of Tancun,

I would LOVE to use a bath oil product made by someone in the tanning industry, but no one does! Lotions, yes, scrubs, yes, bath gels, yes, but not anything to use in the tub except bath gels which are not really designed for going in the water, just applied with a face cloth to the skin.

And look how tricky it is to find a good bath product!! Even Bath and Body Works is doing it wrong!!

Eric, awesome chemist that you are,

I would love a sample of your blooming foot product. I am looking for something great for my skin and less interested in scent, ease of use and ease of cleaning the tub.

BBW has one buy their "Rose" and put two drops in the bottle of "Base oil" and that is your mixture to use, pouring a few drops of base oil in the tub each time. So that does fit your idea of not using the essential oil directly on the skin. It is an oily mess, that's for sure.

And you are welcome to Viewkeepers any time!!
Gotta keep those baby blues shining! Hey, we haven't seen wedding pix!

Keep in mind when using essential oils.. they are strong.. maybe not to the nose..but to our body and it's system.. you must be very careful how much you use in your tub..
You could become light headed..sick to your stomach..many things.. that's why we say only a very very mall amount when using them.
Remember the thread about Garlic oil...
Essential oils travel into our body... reread the thread..I know it sounds a bit funny..but it is truth..
Eric can probably explain why and how this happends better than I can..
I just know it happends..

We shall get you that special Brenda..
(check your mail)..
I made ya'll something.. I think you'll enjoy.

These is really two sides to the essential oil phenomena, and the biochemist in me tends to shutter a bit over often nonfactual based claims that are often made about essential oils.

Chris when you talk about essential oils traveling through the body, ie. The garlic thread, which I went back and read, truly what is happening, is not a literal travel of the oils through the body rather it is an olfactory nerve response in the brain triggering another response somewhere else in the body.

The oils most likely were not really traveling trough the body, rather the individual’s brain was triggering an involuntary response. Take for example these other scenarios that you will notice a similar phenomena, wherein no essentials were involved… 1) Stand in front of the refrigerator and think about what you really want to put in your mouth…. After a few seconds open the door and reach for the Dill Pickle jar…Literally be the time your ears sense the sound of the jar opening your mouth is salivating like a running faucet. 2) Or the old story of smelling mom’s apple pie, and you remembering everything about the scenario growing up, including the taste, surroundings etc.. These responses function in a similar fashion as ones encountered when using aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy and essential oils usage is really an unscientifically studied field…Don’t get me wrong…there is definitely a place for essential oils and aromatherapy in modern personal care and even perhaps therapeutics. No one is willing to underestimate the strength and scope by which our mind plays a role in all aspects of our life, and the more you learn the more you realize how little we really understand about how the brain triggers involuntary biochemical responses.

One could argue that essential oils provide a good source for, vitamins, anti-oxidants..etc, and I would agree, but truly the greatest benefit that essentials provide is their ability to trigger some response in the body.. be it pleasure, relaxation, stress relief or what ever else should result.

Brenda, I am going to send you samples of things you will enjoy, and a sample of a moisturizer we developed, and are a few months away from launching for a chain of dermatology clinics, loaded with the good stuff…Use it daily and you can tell me two weeks after you start using the product the dramatic differences you will have in the texture and overall health of your skin.

Oh and drink lots of water, don’t smoke (not directed at you), and take your anti-oxidants daily.

Email me the address where you would like them sent.

Eric

Do essential oils make your skin feel greasy, I know when I used some type of oil for the bath I felt like I should take a shower right after I got done because I felt gross.

Oh Yeah~I do use a soap that is all natural made by hand that uses essential oils in them. I have been using them for about two years and I love them so much that I incorporated them into my salon, they sell like crazy and people love them!!!
