Electrical requirements

Hi!

I'm thinking of purchasing a salon. The lady I'm buying from runs 5 100w beds and 1 160w stand-up. All of them have buck-boosters. The breaker panel has 200 written on it. The owner says its wired for 160w beds but she had an electrician friend wire it for it. Does anyone know what I should look for? I want to upgrade some of the beds to 160w.
Thanks.

Re: Electrical requirements

You will have problems with big be ds with big watt bulbs. They will pull 40 amps (min) or more if they are single phase. If it's only a 200 amp panel you won't be able the run 5 to 6 big beds. At a minimum with 5 - 6 big beds you'll need 200 to 250 amps for just the beds. Then you'll need 40 to 60 amps minimum for AC, probably more. Lights, fans, sign, computers, printers ect....it adds up fast.

A tanning salon needs 400 amps and up.

Look at the electrical spec tags on the beds and see what the amperage draw is. When buying new beds energy needs are a big concern.

Re: Electrical requirements

As a Electrician, what you need to do is have an electrician come in and Amp out the service and see what the service is at the time of bed and all other items running, this will tell you what the total amp are with all equipment running, then you will know how much more or not you can add to service.

Re: Electrical requirements

Sounds like a dog of a salon..you will not win by buying this...too much $$ to upgrade, (electric upgrade alone would be 15k on the low end, new AC (estimate 2ton per room) would be another 15K or more, beds estimate 4-6k each, rooms are probably to small (why all beds are 100w)...probably cost over 60k for upgrades and new (pre-owned) upgrade beds...

Re: Electrical requirements

Thanks so much for all the info. I don't want to jump too fast on this and after reading your post I don't think I want to jump at all.
