Melanoma comments

When it rains it pours. So, I have a tanning customer announce in front of 2 or 3 other customers that a friend of hers who was just diagnosed with melanoma (not doing well) was told by her doctor that it was caused from tanning beds. The spot removed is on the under side of the forearm on that tender part of your upper arm.

Then my college age employee told me that her anatomy teacher also told her students that melanoma is caused from tanning beds also. I asked her if this was just her opinion and she said no, its in her anatomy book, but that her teacher also wrote the book. She's going to bring in the book so I can see for myself.

I am a melanoma survivor. When I asked what caused it, the only thing he asked me was if I'd ever blistered from a sunburn. I told him. He couldn't give me a definitive answer. I also see a dermatologist every year for a skin cancer check. He specializes in skin cancer and has never told me mine was caused from tanning beds or to much time in the sun, never!!

These people really TICK ME OFF!!!

Re: Melanoma comments

My sister also recently had a Basal Cell Carcinoma removed from her nose. She had to have a skin graft done then also. Her Dr advised her that it was "over-exposure" and the fact that she has blonde hair and blue eyes also puts her in a higher risk category than, say, someone with dark hair and dark eyes. She asked him about the tanning beds as we have both been tanners since we were in high school and he said only if she burnt while she was in it was it a possible contributing factor. Said mostly her skin type and coloring where the reason she got it. Advised her to continue to use beds if she wanted - after letting her nose heal - but to make sure she was using discretion in doing so and to avoid a burn at all costs. She lives in Northeastern Montana.
