Rep Power: 22 | Route 66 trip Next week, leaving for a trip on route 66. Has anybody on here ever did the trip? Wondering what sights we should see, and visit. We expect to be gone for 2 weeks, and a lot of that time will be driving, as our route will take us almost 5000 miles. |

Rep Power: 17 | Re: Route 66 trip I have been from Springfield, MO to Barstow. The ozarks are beautiful to drive through. I believe there is one of the largest crosses in the world in either western oklahoma or into Texas. I had rabbit and rattlesnake in Amarillo. Not much happening in new mexico (unless you go up to Santa Fe, which I did). The painted dessert and petrified forest in Arizona are must see stops. The grand canyon is a day trip up from Flagstaff if you have time (please make time). Nothing comes to mind from Flagstaff to Barstow. Definitely things to see. |

Rep Power: 22 | Re: Route 66 trip Thank you for that info. We will definitely make the trip to the Grand Canyon. We are driving down to Bloomington, Ill. and going from there. Going to blow a little carbon out of the "vette", and see what she does across Oklahoma, and Texas. Any speed traps, to be aware of? |

Rep Power: 17 | Re: Route 66 trip Oklahoma (I'm from there originally) is full of speed traps and nothing but toll roads. Might try speeding out in the desert. Also, make sure your tags are correct because this is something else the Oklahoma highway patrol love to get you for. |

Rep Power: 22 | Re: Route 66 trip Didn't see a cop all through Oklahoma. Matter of fact, saw maybe 5, on our total trip of 4300 miles. Two were on a road, a mile apart, 50 miles from home. Go figure, almost got a ticket going 62 in a 55 zone, 50 miles from home. 80 plus MPH, most of the trip; had to keep up with the rest of the traffic. We had a great time in the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon. |

Rep Power: 22 | Re: Route 66 trip A lot of driving, with many times, not much to see. But, this was a road trip, and I'd do it again. The wife and I experienced being together, in the cockpit of a Corvette, for almost 2 weeks. This was a highlight in-of itself; she co- piloted and I drove. She did the all the planning, reading the maps, and we took over 500 pictures. There really isn't anything we would skip; Maybe do a little more research on the western part of Route 66, Arizona especially, and see more. We didn't continue Route 66 into California, so can't tell you what we missed there. Let me highlight briefly, what we saw, and did: Left Wisconsin and headed down to Bloomington, Il., stayed the night. Then, went to St. Louis and did the "Arch"; Wow, 630 feet high. Continued into the Ozarks, driving mainly on the freeway, because a lot of the route is not drivable, and the small towns are abandoned and boarded-up (what a shame). We did a small corner of Kansas (13 miles), and saw the cute community of Galena, Ks. Saw the old wrecker Towmator, which was used in the movie Cars. Into Oklahoma, we traveled quite a bit on the "route" and saw much interesting history. Texas didn't have much. We stopped at the Cadillac Ranch, but should have bypassed that. Just a few old Cadillacs buried in the ground, with people spraying graffiti on them. Empty spray cans laying all over, and a dirty mess with no trash cans. Didn't see much in New Mexico. Arizona was the most interesting, and where we got off the "route". Things we saw and did there: Painted desert and petrified forest, the Meteor Crater, and The Grand canyon. We hiked into the Grand Canyon and did 3 miles (going down is optional, coming back up is mandatory). Wow, what a breath-taking experience (literally). Then, into Utah for a Zion national park, horseback tour of the 3000 foot peaks; truly amazing with such beauty. Finally, our last site, out west, before heading east, Bryce canyon in Utah. This was, I think, even more spectacular then The Grand Canyon. The beautiful red "HooDoos" rise from the canyon floor and reach for the ski many hundreds of feet. if you go there, you have to hike to the bottom there also. it was a much easier hike of 3 miles, because we were in shape after doing the Grand Canyon hike. After that, into Colorado, through the Rockies, across Kansas and back home. I know I wrote a book here, but it was a trip, I would do again, and see even more. |

Rep Power: 17 | Re: Route 66 trip I have more questions, haha I love road trips. Now that I know you went to Colorado, I'm really intrigued. How did you go? Did you see Mesa Verde? San Juan Mountains? Or did you go through Pueblo? If so, Pike's Peak? Inquiring minds... |
