This show is dedicated as much to tanning salons as it is to Video Store/Salon combos. It's a great chance to network with other retailers from around the country and find that alternative revenue stream/ add-on along with maximizing the revenue streams we currently have. Many ideas shared and free to attend.

To be totally honest, i'm surprised that there are as many video/DVD rental stores left. I used to be an area manager for one of them, this was about 10 years ago. Even then, you could see that the only way ahead for them was down.

Why rent a movie when you can download it??? Ok, so this might be illegal, but the chances of getting caught are very slim. Even then, if you have the balls to go to court against the MPAA the chances are it will get kicked out anyway.

There are many Video stores left throughout the country although the industry has probabally contracted by a third. With Movie Gallery closing along with Blockbuster downsizing they are leaving behind enormous amounts of market share. Also a majority of the Independent Video Stores out there have also added Tanning to their stores giving them two solid revenue streams instead of just the one both streams driving traffic to their stores. With the windows imposed by the studios on Netflix and Redbox along with limiting them to destroying previously viewed I would say the retailers who survived the economic downturn are positioned to have themselves a significant niche market with increased market share.

Re: Video Buyers Group Show 2010 is comming up quick Aug 11th & 12th be sure to RSVP

I understand where you're coming from Jonengen. In the past I used to be an area manager for a company called VideoCity, they were the biggest Independent rental chain in Ireland. They also had tanning beds, Ice cream serve-overs and sold all sorts of other crap ranging from DVD players to slimming tablets.

To me, one of their main problems was that they were considered more of a 'jack of all trades, master of none.' Don't get me wrong, they did make some money on their beds, but to what cost on the DVD rental?

Getting back to DVD downloading though, I wasn't really talking about Netflix and Redbox, more the lines of file sharing!! This is what really killed Videocity. Instead of ignoring it, they made a big thing of it, so instead of a few people knowing how to download, lots of people did, the result was that rentals took a massive nosedive.

Irrespective of what the MPAA say, 'The Pirate Bay' are still up and running, in fact the only thing the court case did was to inform many others about file sharing. A few months ago the torrent site 'oink' (music downloads) were taken to court across here. It took the jury 40 minutes to find them not guilty. Not long after that, Lord Mandelson (Govt's Business Minister) stated that the law was going to be changed to 'If you got caught file sharing 3 times then the ISP would be told to 'cut you off'. Most of the ISP's across here then stated that this wasn't going to happen as it wasn't their job to police the internet.
Even though you're correct in saying that some stores could grasp a bigger slice of the market share, the market itself has and will continue to shrink so having having a massive market share of very little does not really amount to having much.

Both the cinema/movie rental industry need to adapt or they will die.

Just MHO
