Dumbest Criminals

This is a new one for me. We have a customer that complained ALL the time about the light in one spa room being too bright. It is a 40 watt bulb in a clam shaped sconce on the wall and it is far from bright. She says she would like it totally dark in there so she can relax.

So she comes out the other day and we can smell an odor and of course it smells like a burning smell and we really cannot see or find anything. Later that day we empty the hamper in the back hall and we find a towel that has a large black burnt spot on it.

What she did was obviously put the towel over the sconce while she was in the hydration station and it BURNT a large black circle on the towel.

I of course called her and she DENIED it. I told her that I am not dumb (like her) and I know what happened, smelled the odor when she left AND she complained about the light everyday....I can add two and two.

As much as I hated to lose a customer I told her I would refund the remainder of her month MINUS the cost of the towel and told her she could have burned the place down, AND possibly killed people because of her idiotic move. The reason I decided to fire her besides the fact that she could have burned our place down...was that she was SO callus enough to bury the towel and it could have still been smoldering in the hamper and started a fire as well.

I was pi**** that she was so arrogant as an adult to not only do this stupid, stupid unsafe act, but then attempt to bury and hide it...where is her brain? Even though I know 100% it was her, I wish I had her dead to rights so I could press charges.

Wow. Not a very smart person. *If* had such an issue the most I would do it unscrew the bulb during my time. That is the most I would do. One *almost* wishes it did catch fire. Actually with a hole in it like that it may have and she put it out!

Yikes, that's not good Crystal. I would have done the same thing if that ever happened.

One thing we did in our rooms as we've had the same issue is go to 15 watt bulb's overhead and battery operated tea lights(commercial grade) in sconce's on the walls to reduce the lighting and give it more of a relaxing feel in the room. We also placed lamps with a stronger light and turn them off during the treatments. We turn the lamps on for cleaning as it's difficult to see the dirty areas without the extra light. Maybe that would help?

Re: Dumbest Criminals

A 40 watt lamp is not hot enough to start a fire. To start paper or cotton the temp would have to be at least 451ºF and that is to get it to start smoldering after some contact. Here is a pic of a 40 watt light bulb. The highest temp I could get out of it was 352ºF and it has been on for hours. I will do an experiment and cover one up with a towel and measure the temp of it. It will leave a burn mark but I doubt it would ignite the towel. It just isn't hot enough.

Re: Dumbest Criminals

Just install a dimmer switch on that wall lamp. That way if people want it a little darker, they can adjust it.
