Macbook Air would not be a good setup, def go with iMacs. an air is expensive and the screen would be to small. Not to mention an employ would steal it and quit. lol.

Rep Power: 22 | Re: Any Mac users out there? LOL Well the Air is here to now Darn thing is FAST. Even though the clock speed is almost a GHZ slower than my new iMac, it feels as fast if not faster - odd. Anyway. If I do go with two Airs on the desk they will be bolted, cabled and velcroed down. I fear a customer stealing more than a to be ex employee. I only have the trial for Parallels to test this all out for now. So far so good. One reason I may keep the Dell server is that I dont like cables anywhere on the counter. But the main reason is that I can create a disk image of the PC volume and easily copy/backup that image. If something goes wacky with the virtual machine, just dump that image and copy a known good one in place. If one of the Airs is indeed the server, that is not going to be as flexible. Although I suppose I could create a separate volume just for the data?

Rep Power: 20 | Re: Any Mac users out there? I think an amazing setup would be 2 airs, over a Time Capsule (Airport Extreme + Backup Drive) to the Dell. Auto backup your macs on time machine with the Capsule. If there is an error, its as easy at poping in the OSX disc (....may be a problem on an air =P. Im sure they have a solution for it) and selecting the Capsule. I may propose this to mike to see what he thinks for the next computer upgrade we do. Because thinking right now, i can imagine a single thing that could not be done, faster, on OSX that we do right now. If your after speed (i know i am) maybe read some of these: http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks1.htm http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm Just a few "Make XP go way faster" links. And as for clock speed - its just a marketing tool. There is some truth to it... But I mean... a 4ghz P4 with Hyper Threading wouldn't touch a Core2Duo at 1.8Ghz.

Rep Power: 22 | Re: Any Mac users out there? With the Air you can boot holding down the 'option' key, this lets you boot from another drive or computer. You can restore right from Time Capsule once booted. I would probably buy one super drive to boot the OS from though. Network booting is not exactly fast. I just erased the Air when I got it (to remove all those print drivers, languages) and the install took HOURS. But I am on a g network, not n. As for CPU speed. I know its marketing and such and I know these are Core 2 Duos. But my Titanium powerbook was 1.2Ghz, the Air is only 400MHz per core faster but the feel of the speed is very fast. Parallels will not run on an Air right now without crashing. I guess that will be fixed shortly.

Rep Power: 20 | Re: Any Mac users out there? Hey Unity Macs are overrated. Same ol story you gotta jump through hoops just to get software that was designed for windows functioning on a mac. After you purchase the Parallels or Fusion license on top of the windows XP / Vista license all you have is windows running on an overpriced box. So when something doesn't work just right you need to figure out which layer of complication is causing the problem. Why would you want to go down that road? |
