OK, I need some parenting advice here. My 9 year old son came home a couple of weeks ago and said he wanted a cell phone! WTF? He's 9, for God's sake! I asked him why on earth he really though he needed a cell phone and he said, of course, that all of his friends have them. I told him, so what? YOU are not getting one. Who is he going to call? He's always with my husband and I and our parents and his conversations with his friends on the phone consist of playing video games or watching tv while they are on the phone. I though he would forget about it but he keeps bugging me so I gave him my old one and he just looked at me and asked me how he could use it with no service.

Am I being unreasonable here, or do I have a very spoiled child? I am in no way considering getting him one but I just wondered...do any of you have kids this young with cell phones? I think this is just crazy.

That's a bit young IMO. Mine are 12 and 13 and want one. I... don't... think... so. You should see the bill they can run up on mine.

My son has had one since he has been 10. It was more for my piece of mind than his at that age. He is involved in many school activities and we all know how some days it is impossible to get out of the salon on time. Hubby works shifts so he is not always around to check up on him so I always knew where he was and what he was doing because he better answer that phone when I call!

I have been thinking about getting the mingo(similar to the firefly but by verizon) for my niece who is 5. She would like it just because she loves to talk on the phone, and if the 4 numbers that she can call are all verizon numbers she would never use any minutes and it would only be $10 per month.

My 12 year old would like to have a cell phone but there is no way he is getting one until he is older. My other kids didn't get one until they were 16. When they are in their teens and always out with friends and stuff, it is nice to be able to check in and make sure they are okay. But for the really young kids, I cannot imagine why they would really need to have a cell phone.

my nephew is 10 and has a cell. i agree with sunsally with the peace of mind thing. my sister only allows him to bring it to school if he is staying after for something. she also MAKES him take it when hes at a friends house or in the neighborhood playing!

We bought my boyfriends brother a pre-paid phone only for us to get in contact with him or so you can get in contact with us. He is 10 his parents just got a divorce and My boyfriend and I have taken alot of responsibility for him. We like him to feel we are always there. With the pre-paid there is no risk of him racking up a big phone bill. We have nextel phone but nextel wanted $40 bucks a month just for RADIO use......So we just bought him pre-paid mins like 60 mins a month for like 10 bucks.....Simple solution...
the fire fly works well my niece has one it only allows them so many phone numbers....and has an emergency police button right on it which with all the crazy people in this world you never know....its pre-paid as well I believe. Don't give them a phone they can use for whatever...you never know who there talking....and of course alot of times they have no rational understadning of mins!!!
