Anti-Tanning Salon Regulations Passed

Tom Durante 09/29/2005 1:24 pm

Now that the summer sun is no longer shining over LI, the Suffolk County Legislature has approved a bill to regulate tanning facilities in the county.

The Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Act, which was filed by Legis. Vivian Viloria-Fisher (D-Setauket), prohibits children under the age of 14 from using a tanning device in Suffolk County unless they are with a parent or legal guardian. In addition, anyone between the ages of 14 and 18 is prohibited from tanning unless a parent or legal guardian is present or if they have written consent. This consent must indicate the period of time for which the individual is permitted to use the tanning facility. These forms of consent will be kept on file for six months, as well as a copy of the parent’s driver’s license, under the legislation.

Viloria-Fisher, who has been working on the legislation since February, is pleased with the joint efforts of several organizations and proudly looks ahead.

“Our Melanoma Awareness campaign, which was a collaboration between my office, the American Cancer Society, the Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign and several County departments has been successful in raising the public’s awareness of Melanoma and other skin cancers,” Viloria-Fisher said in a statement. “The [act] will continue the education but will take additional concrete steps to prevent this growing deadly cancer.”

Tanning establishments in violation of the law will face a fine of up to $1500.

County Executive Steve Levy is expected to sign the bill within the next few days.
