Thanks, Luvmybch. My kids are just getting old enough to go along. I had great times hunting with my family as well.

I don’t understand why hunting is classified as a sport. I do understand it helps keep the population of the hunted down and there for it keeps somewhat of a balance. I also understand it will provide food for the hunter.. I may not like it but I do accept it. But to call it a sport I will not accept. To kill something that has no defenses or go into its home to kill it is not a sport.

archery is classified as a sport..its in the olympics..of course its not tied to shooting animals but the bow and arrow is a sport..i would call hunting more of a hobby than a sport..

To Kill something as a hobby.. I don’t understand what the enjoyment in that could possible be.

Nice rack... that's fun to say to a guy!

To those that aren't hunters, I would urge you to get some experience around hunters to see their respect for the animals. My personal experience with it has been overwhelmingly positive, and I do not come from a "hunting" background. My husband's family hunts and one of his brother's is a wildlife biologist who really cares about animals and whose career focuses on preserving wildlife habitat. We have had deer hanging in the garage and it is a powerful thing to see such a large beautiful animal. Care was taken in shooting it, having it quartered and later butchered for consumption- nothing was frivolously wasted. The meat is shared with family and friends and inevitably when cooking/serving the animal's story is told a few times, the animal itself is remembered and we appreciate the process. Our kids recognize that meat is from an animal, not just from a package in the store.

Compare this to a slaughterhouse and store bought meat- I hope you discuss with your kids that meat is an animal and that you acknowledge that it died so you can eat it... Just something to think about.

Nice post Sol Sister. People can be so hypocrtical. Its ok to order a steak when you go out to eat, but god forbid you are the one shooting it.
