Nigerian Gets Jail Time For $242 Million 419 Scam

A Nigerian court last week sentenced a woman to 2 1/2 years in prison for her part in a scam to bilk a Brazilian bank of $242 million.
The sentencing of Amaka Anajemba, who pleaded guilty to a so-called advance fee, or -- 419 -- scam, was a major anti-crime victory for Nigeria, which in 2003 set up a special unit, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to crack down on the country's rampant e-mail fraudsters.

In the typical 419 scam -- so called because of the numbering of the relevant code in Nigeria's criminal law -- fraudsters send out spam promising recipients a share of a fortune that just so happens to be inaccessible to the sender. In return for an upfront fee, the recipient is told he'll collect millions.

In the Anajemba case, she and two co-conspirators promised staff at the Sao Paolo, Brazil-based Banco Noroeste S.A kickbacks for funding a bogus contract to build an airport in Nigeria's capital, Abuja.

Under the terms of her sentencing, Anajemba will repay $45 million to Banco Noroeste, give $5 million to the Nigerian government, and pay a small additional fine.

Her two cohorts have both pleaded not guilty.

Nigerian 419 scams are not new, and actually pre-date the Internet. With the ability to spam millions simultaneously, however, the scheme has become among Nigerias most profitable enterprises, ranked by some estimates as the third to fifth largest industry in the country.
