As soon as there's a rash of Lettuce Heists, where hordes of heads of lettuce disappear, OK...taser away. But as long as we're talking misdemeanors...there's no reason an officer can't keep the upperhand another way.
Don't get me wrong, I'm in the military and have many officer (police force) friends. They've dealt with many "unruly" people without tasering. The article doesn't, at any point, say the officer felt endangered. Just the opposite, the man was backing up. |

They asked the guy to step outside so that the incident could be discussed privately while causing as little embarrassment as possible. If the guy had cooperated, stepped outside and discussed the matter in a civil matter, I bet that the situation could have been resolved without anyone so much as raising their voice. Personally, if I hadn't done anything wrong I would have gladly done whatever it took to clear up the confusion as quickly and quietly as possible. By the way, the taser shoots out two pronged wires and the voltage travels between the two prongs once they enter and stick into the body, there is little to no chance that the voltage would be transferred into another person even if someone were touching the person being tasered. The taser technology is completely different than that of a stun gun. The stun gun utilizes pain compliance whereas the taser causes the person to become incapacitated. It's an awesome tool when utilized properly.

I agree with Johnnycomelately. Every situation is different. Cops use way too much
force. The guy was wrong. But in a situation like that, the safety of the public is higher in priority than a guy who got a free salad. That ending could have turned out a lot worse. |

Aurora Father To File Suit Over Police Taser Incident At Salad Bar
Gale Wants $500,000 After Incident At Chuck E. Cheese AURORA, Colo. -- An Aurora father intends to sue the city after he was shocked with a taser by police over a salad bar incident at Chuck E. Cheese. Danon Gale, 29, is asking for $500,000 in damages stemming from the Feb. 27 incident in which police said he became belligerent after he couldn't prove he paid for the salad. A lawyer for Gale has filed a notice of intent to sue to the city of Aurora, the police department and the officers involved. The incident began when officers were called to the restaurant at 145005 East Exposition on a report of a larceny in progress. Police talked to the Chuck E. Cheese manager who told them that a customer had refused to show proof that he had paid for food. The manager said the man was seen "loading" his plate at the salad bar. The officers confronted Gale, who was at the restaurant with his children, aged 3 and 7. Patrons said the popular kids pizza parlor was packed with children and families at the time. According to police, Gale was asked to step outside to discuss the accusations. "According to witnesses (Gale) refused to cooperate with police and a struggle ensued," said Larry Martinez, a police spokesman. He said that Gale became argumentative and shoved one of the officers, a fact disputed by another patron. The argument escalated until Gale was shoved into the lap of a woman, who was sitting two booths away, holding a 10-month-old baby. That's when police pulled out a Taser stun gun to subdue him, the witness said Gale's two children were "screaming and hollering and crying" as Gale was shocked two times with the stun gun, according to Felicia Mayo who was sitting nearby. Gale was arrested for investigation of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and trespassing. His two children were picked up by a relative. An internal investigation into the incident by the city is still under way. Source |
