Rep Power: 24 | You will have to get a new ISP in order to get your email set up. I have cable modem at home & DSL here and I honestly cannot tell any difference. Cable is $49.00/month and DSL is $29.00/month. So I will be switching at home as well. Try to save all of your email addresses onto a disk or print it out for imput later. Some companies have the option of transferring them for you so you might ask before you sign up to see how they want you to save the info. You may also be able to save your favorites in your windows Explorer or copy the addresses to disk as well. If your email address is at hotmail (through MS) you will still be able to access it. |

Rep Power: 107 | When you connect to the Internet, you might connect through a regular modem, through a local-area network connection in your office, through a cable modem or through a digital subscriber line (DSL) connection. DSL is a very high-speed connection that uses the same wires as a regular telephone line. Here are some advantages of DSL: You can leave your Internet connection open and still use the phone line for voice calls. The speed is much higher than a regular modem (1.5 Mbps vs. 56 Kbps) DSL doesn't necessarily require new wiring; it can use the phone line you already have. The company that offers DSL will usually provide the modem as part of the installation. But there are disadvantages: A DSL connection works better when you are closer to the provider's central office. The connection is faster for receiving data than it is for sending data over the Internet. The service is not available everywhere. DSL is a method for moving data over regular phone lines. A DSL circuit is much faster than a regular phone connection, and the wires coming into the subscriber's premises are the same (copper) wires used for regular phone service. A DSL circuit must be configured to connect two specific locations, similar to a leased line (howeverr a DSL circuit is not a leased line. A common configuration of DSL allows downloads at speeds of up to 1.544 megabits (not megabytes) per second, and uploads at speeds of 128 kilobits per second. This arrangement is called ADSL: Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. Another common configuration is symmetrical: 384 Kilobits per second in both directions. In theory ADSL allows download speeds of up to 9 megabits per second and upload speeds of up to 640 kilobits per second. DSL is now a popular alternative to Leased Lines and ISDN, being faster than ISDN and less costly than traditional Leased Lines. See also: ADSL, Bandwidth, ISDN, Leased Line, SDSL If your current ISP has DSL services you probably won't need to change email addresses. Change providers and your address well have to change too. Anything that you have saved on you computer to date, such as emails and logs from MSN should not be affected by a change of ISP. That is, email etc. that have been downloaded and are now on your hard-drive. Anything sent to your old address will not be accessible, unless your old provider is willing to forward them to a new address. _________________ Why won't it fit?[ This Message was edited by: Neon Beach on 2004-11-12 18:16 ] |

Rep Power: 24 | You can sign up at her web site & she sends computer tips every day. Some are really helpful! It doesn't cost anything. The best thing I got from her site was a free download for Spybot which searches & removes any cookies left on your machine so it iliminates most of those darn pop-ups & spam. |
