in political speech now in the U.S. a liberal is a person who believes it is the duty of government to ameliorate social conditions and create a more equitable society. Liberals favor generous spending on the welfare state; they exhibit a concern for minorities, the poor, and the disadvantaged and often see these conditions as a product of social injustices rather than individual failings.
www.ptvincivilsociety.org/glossary.htm

Favoring reform or progress, as in religion, education, or socioeconomic conditions; specifically, favoring political reforms tending toward democracy and personal freedom for the individual; progressive. Liberals tend to favor greater federal power to remedy social inequities, and to support freedom of personal choice and behavior. Liberals are described as being left of center on the political spectrum. Of the two major political parties, the Democratic Party is generally regarded as being more liberal.

In design and analysis, a conservative model or a conservative assumption is one that departs from accuracy in such a way that it reduces the chances of a false-positive assessment of the feasibility of the system in question. Conservative assumptions overestimate problems and underestimate capabilities.
www.foresight.org/Nanosystems/glossary/glossary_c.html

A conservative risk assessment estimates high-end risk rather than low-end risk. A conservative risk assessment should not underestimate risk and, therefore, will indicate risk to most species of plants and animals.
www.epa.gov/region5/superfund/eco/html/glossary.html

A conservative is a person to the right of center on the U.S. political spectrum. Of the two main political parties, the Republican Party is regarded as being the more conservative. Conservatives tend to uphold tradition and oppose major changes in laws and institutions. Change, when thought to be necessary, should be gradual and minimal. Conservatives generally oppose "big government" and support free-market economic policies and low taxes.
www.pbs.org/democracy/glossary/print.html

A person who tends to be cautious about new policies or changes in government, who favors traditional values, and who generally feels the government should stay out of the affairs of private citizens and businesses. Traditional values might be described as those that have been around for a while. Conservatives like things the way they are or were. (See LIBERAL).

Handouts? GOD DAM wanna be republicans have just NO CLUE about what they are even saying. You cry about Kerry raising taxes but a vote for him is a "handout"????? There's no debating someone with no ryme or reason to their way of thinking. Actually, I can think of plenty of reasons for the way of thinking, just none that support the republicans in any way.
