LJ, this is an area that I can help, we own BioTNT which is a nutritional counseling center, we are also offering concession programs to put diet counseling into gym's and Tanning Salons, (shameless spam).

That is a tough question, it would depend on a number of things, your body fat %, daily activity level, and health history. So to give you a precise answer in this forum would be most likely impossible. For a general gidelines I would recomend at least 5 small meals a day containing both protein and carbs. The food pyrimid, although a healthy guideline, will do nothing at all for metabolism, and in most cases will not help with any fat loss. Hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions I can help with.

BioTan... I know about how to keep it healthy.. what to eat and how often... I have been told by "gym" people that you take your weight and times it by 10 and that is how many calories you need. Well... I would get 1000 a day. hmmmmmmmmm that to me seem like I will starve...lol... I am just 35 now and noticed that I have gained about 5 pounds in the past year or so... and that is weird for me...anyway... I am 4'11... small-med framed and 102-107ish pounds... I look my best and can find a size to fit me at 100 pds.. it is really hard to find cloths to fit a 4'11 gal.. so anyway... I am not into starvation and not into fads.. I do work out.. but thought that I could stop the weight from coming on as I get older by just watching calories... now, as I have watched myself.. I eat comfortably about 1600 a day... anyway... from what I have been learning... if I have always eaten 1600 to 2000 calories a day... all my life at my size... and stayed there.. then I burn that many a day... I must not do that anymore.. so I thought I would go down 200-400 calories a day.. because I do not have any more time to add another workout.. nor do I choose to. Does this sound like a good plan to you? Or should I lower my calorie intake more at first to get the 5-7 pound off and then maintance calories at the 200-400 less a day? Oh... and my BMI is 19 point something..close to 20. and health history has nothing bad in it at all...

Not a bad place to start, it sounds as if you have a great metabolism. Rather then just lowering your calories, look at where your calories come from. Meaning of those 1600, how many are Protein, carb, and fats. Many times with my clients by canging the ratios of those three we can maintain the same amount of calories, and drop fat!

I used to manage for Bally Total Fitness' nutritional store. There are many things to consider when looking at ones' own caloric intake and what is right for you... i.e. are you trying to maintain, loose, gain, how many calories you burn a day, do you work out? All of these thing factor into what you need/day. There are also good calories and bad calories. Best thing to do is sit down w/ a nutritionalist who can determine what you specifically need based on your expendature.
