Rep Power: 0 | We're not posting them. The pictures still stay on the originating server. Like my polo picture is coming from polo.com, and isn't on the tantalk servers. This is called linking. The internet was based on linking. Without this it wouldn't be the internet |

Rep Power: 0 | hey tanpimp....i agree with you, its cool to advertise anyone... however....what your doing is illegal... your polo.com image, yes, its linked from polo.com....... however..this is called "hotlinking"...which is considered bandwidth theft... i run a HUGE message board...8000+ users...and i was able to use my server logs to trace people stealing images from my site, placing them on theirs...while it still being on my server..(which makes it load on my site everytime their page is accessed...aka..using my bandwith...which i pay lotsa $$$$ for)... in the long run...i reported them to their ISP for abuse...and after a small case..their website was shut down due to illegal activity... so literally...by you having this image.... its ok if its on your web server(or web space)..and its ok to advertise...but the fact that its hotlinked from polo...you personally are safe...but your illigally stealing their bandwidth each time that image loads in one of your posts.....which places TT in jeopardy..... _________________ Place Signature Here[ This Message was edited by: netmikey on 2003-04-05 01:56 ] |

Rep Power: 0 | "hotlinking" to anything is not illegal. You can block people from doing it if it's taking up too much bandwidth. There is no law against it. There is no law againt "stealing someone's bandwidth" unless your doing it in a malicious manner (DoD attacks, etc) |

Rep Power: 23 | but you are not allowed go to posting trademarked company logos wherever you want... Say whatever you want about free advertising, but if Ralph Lauren spotted this, they would not be happy and you would probably hear from them via a lawyer. |

Rep Power: 0 | its not stealing! it's not like I'm hacking into their server and putting my webpage on there. go to images.google.com search for any picture. All of the results shown are not hosted on google's site. They are hosted on the original websites. It is not illegal. It's not really immoral either. I'd think twice if I was linking it from someone's personal page, but this is polo.com which gets millions of hits a week and my little graphic really isn't going to cost them any money. |
