Rep Power: 28 | Most of you know I am a big animal lover. I have cats galore, and 3 dogs. My new baby, Champ, is a Registered Yellow Lab. 9 months old, weighs 66 lbs. and is very beautiful and smart. Still a big puppy though. He sleeps in the bed with me and Russ, until he gets bored and then moves to the cold tile floor. He is truly our baby. Russ always gets up before me and gets his shower and takes Champ outside and ties him up while he goes to eat breakfast. Well this morning Russ decided to let him back in the house. (Bad choice today) Champ jumped up in the bed with me and stayed until I got up to get ready for work. Russ' business office is in our basement and his shop is out back. This morning some of the workers came in and was getting loaded up to go off on a job. While I was showering, Champ heard them and went to see who had come to see him. They left the door open and he slipped outside. As I was leaving out the front door, I stopped to feed the cats. And I noticed something moving to my left. Yep it was Champ standing at the gate to the girl dogs. I called him and about that time a kitten took off toward our neighbors. Champ was right on top of it. Shewww The kitten got away, but now I was chasing and calling for Champ to come back. No way he said, he was gonna go on a little trip to scout things out. By this time, my stepson and one of their employees saw what was going on and stop to help me. Champ would not stop and come back. We live on a very busy highway. He crossed over the first 2 lanes and made it, but the next 2 lanes was a nightmare. There were approx. 15 cars tail to tail in both lanes. All I could do is scream and hope that he made it. He didn't. A car hit him and he rolled about 4-5 times. I fell out on the ground. I couldn't watch. But thank the good Lord, he got up and came running back to me. Todd sat and held him while I run back to the house and got my tahoe. As soon as he saw my tahoe, he wanted to go. So I got him in the back and took him to the vet. So far all sounds well. I will be picking him up this afternoon. They don't see any internal injury. At least so far. He has a scrape on his head and nose and one of his toe nails was bleeding. He will be getting the rest of his shots today as well. And next week the girl dogs are going to be spade, so he can run in the fence with them. One of them likes him and the other doesn't but hopefully they will be okay once they are fixed. If not, we have a freind that lives on a mountain with no major roads. He wants the girls and will be very good to them. I just don't want to part with them. But I may have to. It has been a very disturbing day for me. But I am so thankful he is gonna be okay. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest. I have been a nervous wreck all day and near tears. See I never had human children of my own, so my animals are my babies. |

Rep Power: 28 | Update: Champ is home and is doing okay. No broken bones or internal injury. He is very sore and had a restless night. I guess he will be sore for a few days, but at least he is well enough to be home. |

Rep Power: 0 | Im glad to hear that Champ will be ok. I so understand what you went through, however we weren't so lucky. We lost our loyal friend 2 months ago, not to a highway but tragic just the same. "Lucky" was half of our breeding pair, (Silky Terriers) he was 31/2 years old. For a few days he had not being eating, very lethargic not his usual self...took him to the vets...vet could find nothing wrong, sent us home after administering a shot of pain. A few days later Lucky began to vomit, took him back and this time they noticed what they called an "inguinial hernia" said he required surgery to repair it. We told the vet to do what ever it took, Lucky had surgery that afternoon, I went to see him after work that same day, he was just coming out of the anestetic and was shivering but aware that I was there. The vet told me that he had to remove a small part of intestine that was dead due to the hernia and that one of his testicals were also damaged and removed however he would still be able to reproduce. The vet assured me all was ok, she would call me in the morning and that he should be able to go home in a few days. Early next morning she called me to tell me that he has just passed away. I was in shock, she had just told me the night before everything was fine what happened to the dog? Apparently, Lucky had a hemorage from the intestinal repair, they said they tried everything to save him it wasnt meant to me. We miss him very much, my special needs child especially misses him terribly. The female Silky (Lita) is just now adjusting to his absence. We have thought of replacing him but right now were still not ready, I still step over his dish and every so often I find myself calling Lita...Lucky. So I underdstand how devastated you were but I'm very happy that things turned out postitive for you and Champ...hope he has a speedy recovery. |

Rep Power: 28 | thank you beachbumz, I am sorry to hear of your loss. Two years ago, I lost my Chow, very similar to your situation. No surgery, but yet similar. Three months later my cat passed away. Had taken them both to the vet for routine checkup. Chow died before I got back to pick him up that afternoon, Cat died 2 days after the visit. Makes me wonder about that doctor. I don't use him anymore. Pets are our kids, ya know. |

Rep Power: 0 | Ladies, sniff.... sniff.... I am so very sorry beachbumz, and Mitzi your are so very lucky and have a beautiful dog. I have two rotties and two poms. My poms are indoors and all of them are like children. My husband loves them dearly as well but accuses them of getting more love and attention than he does. Well, they do. Lets see.... Their not demanding, gives unconditional love, doesn't argue or talk back, and as I type this post one is laying to my right and the other to my left both in identical positions. They are my babies and I love them very much. My male pom is 8 years old and is already showing signs of aging and I will have to take a bereavement leave if any of them pass away. Especially if the circumstances are as unexpected as yours were beachbumz. Again, I'm truly sorry, even though you can bring in another animal they can not replace the personality of the one lost. |
