Rep Power: 0 | Nice web site. Let me make the case for Chipp and the all stand-up model. Chipp is doing exactly what I did when I planned my third salon in 1985--all VHR booths. VHR was pretty new then and SunCapsule was the first with VHR stand-ups. I bought five. Having all booths follows the philosophy that the medium is the message. A salon sporting all booths and no beds conveys the message that this is a viable way to tan, that it MUST be so because this salon is staking its reputation on it. This simplifies marketing too because all you do is market the benefits of tanning upright. Much easier than a salon with mixed equipment trying to convey the advantages of VHR over base beds. Stand up salons are the epitome of efficiency. Less maintanance, fewer employees, more tans per hour, less space needed so less rent, etc, etc. When I got into stand-ups they were cheaper than available lay-downs, but that's not true anymore. My booth salon eventually went up in smoke (literally) as Today's Image detailed in the latest issue (yes, I was the subject of a feature article). I didn't rebuild but I still believe it is a viable model. The blank stares or outright hostility you get when you try to get your people to forsake your lay down beds for the VHR stand-up in the back of the salon is mostly because you have many lay-downs to just a few or one stand-up. This conveys the message that most people tan laying down and you might as well too. You don't get much of that with a stand-up salon. The customers know what it is--they wouldn't be there if it didn't at least intrigue them. There were quite a few SunCapsule salons in the late 80s. Certain areas of the country (I can speak for the Philadelphia area) still have quite a few all stand-up salons. Hollywood Tans, say what you will, are proving the stand-up concept a successful one. |
