Rep Power: 26 | Mitzi: Mohammad Ali was treated for several years by a doctor whose research we supported and he had his "blood work" done at our medical laboratory. Whenever he would come in to get his blood drawn, ALL work stopped as all of our medical technologists said "hello" to him. I had the pleasure of going to lunch and/or dinner with "the Champ" on numerous occasions and, even though he is hard to understand, he absolutely "controls" the conversation. Bright, witty, caustic, opiniated and very, very funny (most of his "stories" can't be repeated!). His "chairisma" is second to none; you understand (as does he!) when you "break bread" with him that there will be a steady stream of people coming up to "say hello" and get his autograph. (He doesn't sign them anymore; rather, he gives them a "presigned" card with a "replica" of his signature on it but people are thrilled anyway.) My favorite memory of Mohammad (and one of my favorite stories) came about one Sunday night when a group of us were going out to eat. I had the honor of picking up Mohammad (who sat in front with me), his wife Lonni and his brother-in-law. I am a big country music fan and I had my favorite station playing when I picked them up. When "the Champ" turned the volume back up and country music "filled the car" I told him to feel free to change to another station if he wanted to. There was silence as he listened to the music and then he said "Leave it on - Mohammad's "gone country"! Several times after that (when he came in for treatment), he told me he was still listening to country music. So there you have it folks, yours truly helped convert "the Greatest!" to country music. Any other country music fans out there? Don |
