Now it's my turn to ask for some help:-)

I have a setup where our server is Windows NT 4.0 with service pack 6
installed and our workstations are win 95, 98 and ME PCs. The network itself
is running fine but I can not print across the network. The printers are
shared and setup properly. All printers can print fine locally. The printers
are nothing special; HP LaserJet's, Cannons, etc. We are not a really big
network, only about 15 PCs. We are running 10BaseT with 3 hubs (due to the
configuration of the building). We swapped Hubs, tried new network cards,
etc.

The error we get is the following:

"There was an error printing to \\Reception\hp1100 for printer (HP LaserJet
1100);
There was a problem printing to the printer due to an unknown system error.
Restart Windows, and then try printing again.
This printer will be set to work offline.
To save your print job in the local printer queue, click OK"

What has me absolutely baffled is that everything else on the network runs
fine. We run a network software package (MAS90) which everyone can run
without a problem. We have a cable modem being accessed across the network
and everyone can access the internet with no problems.

I've scanned for viruses and found nothing. The system worked for two years
without a hitch.

We hired a consultant to come by and look at it and he left after 3 hours
completely confused and frustrated as to why we could not print across the
network. He said we had the network set up wrong (I had given each computer
a specific address in the TCP/IP instead of using DHCP) so we went through
and resetup the entire network using DHCP. Although the network does seem to
run faster and the internet access as seemed to improve, I still have the
printing problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've posted this on some Windows NT newsgroups and have yet to receive any help.

Thank you,

Kevin Barrett

Kevin,
What computer and os is the printer attached to? Are you running NT Server or Workstation on your server. Have you set up an NT Domain or are you running workgroups?

John,

Thank you for replying. This problem is driving me crazy!

We are running NT Server and Domain named Workgroup.

We have added a Savin Copier, printer, fax machine. The savin copier has it's own eithernet connection and is connected to a hub. The first thing I did was delete the drivers and disconnect the Savin from the network. Did not help. Nothing else has been added that I know of.

It's a Network wide problem (I just used the receptionist as an example). I deleted and reloaded the driver many times. I even went on the internet and downloaded the latest drivers.

This problem is really printing from from client to client. We don't use the Server for a print server except for the Savin. I brought a printer from home and connected it to my computer (Windows ME) locally and it prints fine. Other machines can print locally running either Win ME, 98 or 95.

The strange thing is, there are some that can print and others that can't. Most can't. And some that can can print to one printer across the network but not to others. For example. One guy can print to the accountants printer, but not to the receptionist. I can't print to any.

THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN FIXED (well...sort of).

Connected my printers to a print server and every one can print to the printers now. Not the solution I wanted but I'm going to be on vacation next week and had top get this resolved. Time spent on this has already exceeded the cost of the print servers.

On a personal note: I placed this problem on 3 Windows NT newsgroups and got no replies. I posted it on the tanning news groups and Folks immediately started trying to help. I truly appreciate your assistance. Thank you everyone for you help and suggestions.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
