Gaven,You sound like somone who has his mind made up and is not interested in hearing any evidence which contadicts your claims.Do more research into the facts before you make blanket statements about things in which you have an 'opinion' not proof.

You want some proof? Sure there is a lot of proof out there about how sun exposure leads to premature aging and increases the risks of skin cancers.I would be very interested in proof that says a life time of tanning is good for you? I mean real proof done by doctors or researchers at university's not some Joe who own a tanning salon and has an opinion. Some say what you don't know can't hurt you. I disagree.: http://oncolink.upenn.edu/cancer_news/1994/tanning.html (taken from the University of Pennsylvania cancer center"In the tanning process, changes other than skin color occur beneath the surface of the skin. Over the years, these changes may lead to a wrinkled, leathery appearance called "premature skin aging" and to skin cancer. Each time you tan, your chances of developing skin cancer in later life are increased. Other factors, including your own skin's sensitivity to UV radiation, also affect your chances of developing skin cancer. A tan does block out some radiation in attempting to protect the skin from further injury, but it is inadequate protection against skin cancer and premature skin aging.""PREMATURE SKIN AGING - One of the most noticeable signs of repeated UV exposure over the years is premature skin aging, appearing much earlier in life than you may expect. According to some skin specialists, skin that has a dry, wrinkled, leathery appearance in middle age can result from UV exposure that took place before the age of 20. In fact, some evidence suggests that exposure before age 20 causes more long term damage than exposure at later ages.""WHO IS AT HIGHEST RISK FOR DAMAGE FROM UV RADIATION? Generally speaking, individuals who have red or blond hair and blue eyes, are fair-skinned, have freckles and sunburn easily are at highest risk for skin damage. One rule to remember; if you burn and don't tan in sunlight, you will burn and won't tan using sunlamps. You should never expose yourself to sunlamp radiation if your skin is Type 1 in the chart below."From the national skin cancer foundation: http://www.skincancer.org/news/000526-notan.html "The International Smart Tan Network, an alliance of indoor tanning centers throughout North America, has been drumming up business by promoting its "Golden Rule of Smart Tanning: Don't Ever Sunburn." But, says the Foundation - there is no such thing as a "smart" tan. Indoor tanning may provide short-lived cosmetic benefits, but the skin's appearance and health is significantly worsened in the long run. UV exposure leads to wrinkled, leathery, discolored skin, and animal studies have shown that premature skin aging is caused by both UVB and UVA, especially in chronic, low-dose exposures such as those received by an indoor tanner. (Tanning machines today produce mainly UVA, but also UVB.) Animal research has also linked tanning devices to squamous call carcinoma, and recent epidemiological studies have associated UVA/UVB tanning with the development of the deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma."From the American Academy of Dermatology: [URL=http://www.aad.org/DermInsights/Fall2000/tanning.html" T

So... i'm still waiting on your proof; since you all seem to know a lot about health and sun i'd like to see the studys you read? i've never read one scientific article that said the amount of uv one would need to maintain a year round tan is healthy? because of coarse a little sun is healthy i ain't trying to say it isn't and i'm a surfer and wear a good sunscreen when i'm out in the sun but i still am taking quite a bit of damage. But i never just lay out in the sun, to me it just isn't worth it but i love to surf and of coarse alot of the things we do in life aren't healthy and of coarse i will die someday of something but i don't think it's healthy how so many young people especially girls around where i live use tanning beds year round; sure some people can get away with it but... and the whole "safe tan" propaganda is a crock, just ask your dermatologist. And yes I had a conversation with my dermatologist about this very stuff.

Dermatologists have an agenda in sun scare. Cosmetic companies do as well. Who do you think funds all the derm research? Cosmetic companies. The worse they get the derms to say UV is, the more they can profit from Sunscreen, UV proof Makeup, etc. None of us have responded to you because after a while, we get kind of tired of trying to defend ourselves to those that choose to see one side.

Well said Linda!Gaven, I have concluded that you are not interested in learning anything different than what you already believe. You are not interested in anything we have to say. There are plenty of posts already on this site that refutes each point in your post.So why should any of us waste our time with you?You are entitled to your opinion. But don't expect to be able to come here and bash our industry and gain any agreement or respect from us.[ September 13, 2001: Message edited by: Becky ]

well geez you sound so confident that your right can't you just linked me one report that supports your side? I mean surely the tanning industry would fund research of there own if they thought they were getting unjustly accused? I mean i gave several links to research and studys can't you give me one?Or maybe it's just easier to blame it on the cosmetic companys? but i don't see how that really makes much sense. People that tan don't buy cosmetic products or something. Most people that tan buy tanning lotion instead of a sunblock? so i don't get that at all.And if anything dermatologists make more money off people that get skin cancer so, if it's a money issue that don't make much sense either? but maybe i'm just being fooled huh
