Rep Power: 0 | article on melanotan the tan of the future : --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Melanocyte-stimulating hormone gets its name because of its effect on melanocytes: skin cells that contain the black pigment, melanin. In humans, melanocytes are responsible for moles, freckles, and suntan. In most vertebrates, MSH is produced by an intermediate lobe of the pituitary gland. Its secretion causes a dramatic darkening of the skin of fishes, amphibians, and reptiles. The darkening occurs as granules of melanin spread through the branches of specialized melanocytes called melanophores. The photomicrograph on the right shows melanophores in the skin of a frog with the melanin dispersed throughout the branches of the cells. This effect is produced by MSH. When the pigment retreats to the center of the cells, the skin lightens. The photo below was taken a few moments after the frog on the right was injected with a small dose of MSH. Proopiomelanocortin (POMC), the same precursor molecule from which the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is synthesized also produces two forms of MSH. In fact, alpha-MSH is identical to the first 13 amino acids at the amino terminal of ACTH. Researchers at the University of Arizona have shown that alpha-MSH can cause darkening of human skin. With FDA approval, they injected male volunteers with a synthetic version of alpha-MSH - which they called Melanotan I - to see if their skin darkened. It did, raising the possibility of using melanotan to get a suntan without the risks of exposure to ultraviolet light. A second synthetic version of MSH - dubbed Melanotan II, also darkened the skin of male volunteers. Unexpectedly, it also caused many of them to develop penile erections. This has raised the possibility of using MSH to cure impotence. MSH and appetiteHumans have no intermediate lobe in their pituitary gland, and MSH may not be a circulating hormone for us. However, alpha-MSH is found in the brain where it acts to suppress appetite. Some cases of extreme obesity have been traced to mutations in the brain receptor for alpha-MSH. Presumably these people are unable to respond to the appetite-suppressing effect of their alpha-MSH.Welcome&Next Search ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------20 April 2001 |

Rep Power: 24 | Ummmm....I will still pass. You also didn't answer my questions about other effects. I doubt it will make tanning beds obsolete. Come back in 10 years and if I am wrong, you can say "I told ya so!"Wrinkles in Florida??? Maybe because that is where everyone retires to when they are 94 years old! Ya think?[ August 01, 2001: Message edited by: BOBER96 ] |

Rep Power: 0 | no more likely it is because so many are constantly exposed to sun,and you dont think tanning beds will become obsolete hmmm, well why would someone want to use them when they can take a small pill like a vitamin and get the same results ,without the wrinkles !!!!and sun damage,do you actually think tanning beds are healthy ?and dont cause wrinkles ?you have to be kidding or be smoking some real good bud ,becasue it is a fact thay cause a lot of damage.the large majority of the popualtion gets wrinkles and skin damage from all sun exposure tanning beds included ,when melanotan becomes available or ptpt, tanning beds will just be high speed skin aging machines ,you wont need them to tan !!!!! wny would people want to sit i9n a machine to age their skin quicker ? you obviously dont want your other members seeing my site ,why I dont know,I guess miost people with common sense would agree I am right !!!!! |

Rep Power: 24 | william, like I said, this is not my site, so I don't care if anybody goes to your site or not. What does concern me is when you come on a TANNING site, for members of the TANNING INDUSTRY and bash tanning. Not cool. If you hoenstly expect people to welcome you with open arms when you bash what we do for a living, then YOU must be the one with the righteous Bud! Oh....any side effects to this? |

Rep Power: 23 | Yeah... well, this is the same guy that wants us to support him after pointing fingers, making blind accusations and bashing the very industry that puts food on the table of most of our members. He's obviously not the sharpest knife the drawer... and based on that conclusion, one can deduce that he has chosen a product that isn't tested or safe. Here Slick Willy... have some ephedrine! I'm sure it will blend well with your tanning cocktail. |

Rep Power: 24 | You are indeed bashing our industry. wrinkle machines, people getting cancer, smoking bud, etc, these are complimentary? No, not really. How can you say something is fact when it has not been given a go ahead by the FDA? You are not helping your cause to come on here bashing us and expect us to be your welcome wagon to the industry. Quote:Originally posted by william:im just telling it like it is !!!!
