Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Uniforms/ Dress Code Do you give all your employees uniforms, or do they have to purchase them and what do they consist of? If not, then what kind of dress code do you enforce? We're kind of an upscale salon- we ask that they wear nice jeans (dark denim only), a nice top or shirt, and appropriate shoes. I think it'd be nice to have matching shirts or track suits for special events and such. If you have ordered uniforms or shirts what sources have you used? |

I like the Vitamin-D promoting T-Shirts, and Lotion promoting because often times when people see a T-Shirt promoting a certain lotion, they will ask me about it... Ex: One of my shirts says, Is your skin Designer Skin?... And that gives me a start to a nice sales pitch on which Designer Skin lotion I am using to get my color!

| Police Department ![]() | Re: Uniforms/ Dress Code Look on your state labor law posters. Most states require you to provide the first two at no cost. I used to charge until an employee showed me that on the labor law posters. Can't seem to get employees to read training material but they sure read the labor laws posters. |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Re: Uniforms/ Dress Code We do staff T-shirts. They have to pay for the first one, and then I give them additional if needed. That way, I don't train someone for a week, realize it's not going to work out, and then be out a T-shirt if they don't return it. Here's what my state law says: Generally, the cost of providing and maintaining a uniform which bears the name or logo of the employer may be passed on to an employee through a wage deduction -- with the employee's signed written authorization. However, an employee may be held responsible for the depreciated value of the uniform if it is not returned as required. |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Re: Uniforms/ Dress Code Logo T w/ nice pant. No sweats or similar. Fridays, anything goes as long as they are setting a good image for the salon. We provide the first shirt, if they quit/terminated during probationary period, we dock their check the cost. After first shirt, they buy more as they like at cost. I'll have to check out our labor poster. |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Re: Uniforms/ Dress Code I found this: Q. Can an employer make a deduction for uniforms or uniform maintenance? A. No. The Law states "No deduction from the pay of employees for uniforms shall be permitted. If the employee pays for uniforms in cash and the cash payment brings the employee below the minimum wage, the employer shall make up the difference for the minimum wage for that week." In addition, an employer may not require an employee to purchase a uniform that contains a company logo or cannot be worn as street wear. However, Section 34:11-4.4b(6) of the Wage Payment Law, NJSA 34:11-4.1 et seq., allows deductions including those for: "Payments authorized by employees or their collective bargaining agents for the rental of work clothing or uniforms or for the laundering or dry cleaning of work clothing or uniforms; provided the deductions for such payments are authorized by the employer." and I have a feeling the owner won't go for buying everyone their first shirt, which is kind of a bummer for me...cause I'm running out of cute clothes to wear to work. |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Re: Uniforms/ Dress Code I wouldn't be to upset that an employee gets me for a t-shirt. Hopefully they will wear it and then I get some advertisment. Eitherway, I wouldn't require them to return it or make them pay for it. We give our emplyees 1 or 2 shirts a year, we have given hoodies as Christmas presents and we usually let them buy more shirts at our cost, $4-$7. |

UNLESS They sign something saying, they allow it to be deducted from their pay and that they agree to the terms. They you can do whatever you want. Just get them to sign it. Also read somewhere on the forums that i thought was cool. You don't charge your employees for uniforms and have to deal with them returning it after they quit etc.... Just get a bunch of shirts made up, have them at the salon. They come in and put one on. At end of the shift, they put it in the basket to be washed in the back. So now they just wear it that day and wash it in the back. No worries, no hassle. I mean you wash the towels for customers, why not do a load for the employee shirts. No excuses that they were coming from school or their other job and forgot to bring their uniform...etc......
