For those of you who are open on Black Friday, what specials do you run? This is my first year being open Black Friday and I keep going back and forth on what specials to run. I have advertised that this will be the biggest sale of the year. Not sure if I wanna do buy one, get ones or percentage off. Any suggestions of what has worked best for you would be appreciated.

Based on what we have done I recommend:

Push unlimiteds at great rates prices. People seem to not fully use them. Like buy one month, get 6 weeks free. The majority of our clinets used the first three weeks then from there most did not come in much. There is also a large number that NEVER tanned on it.

You will find that many come in and buy but may not tan that day.

Session/minutes can be banked so we do run a special on them but it not very aggressive.

We do have a open to noon promo on sessions though. These expire within 2 month of purchase. Most people don't use them up anyway. Some never used them.

Careful how early you advertise, people will hold back purchasing now and in the end you may find that while you do good with the sale the days leading up are poor and the month total may not be what you were hoping for.

Yeah, my advertisement just started to run today, so hopefully will still get great results. I had advertised with my exsisting customers with postcards at the beginning of the month too and so far have had people purchase the smaller packages (our smaller packages actually cost the customer more per session than our larger ones) to hold them off until the Black Friday sale. Do you discount your tanning lotions at all on this day too? I am thinking about doing a 30% off lotions and packages for this day only. What are your thoughts about that?

Ya, we do lotions too.

Doing a broad percentage off can be good or bad depending on what people in your area are attracted to.

Doing a percentage off sale read like this:

"This weekend, everything 30% off"

Where as doing specific sales reads like this:

"This weekend:
Before noon pick up 10 tans for $XX!!!!
Buy one month get one free!!!!!
All of our best products 30% OFF!!!!
Free upgrades ALL WEEKEND!!!!"

You get the idea. So if you do 30% off all the stuff, try to advertise more specifics to reflect that discount. I think that seems to work best.

I have a few package specials I'm going to run. For lotions, I'm doing a percentage off WITH the purchase of a package.
I do a FTW in Feb/March, so I'm saving my best deals for then.

What about...

"Free upgrades with the purchase of ____ sample" ... Like a free High Pressure upgrade with the sample of Black, and etc.
or
"Free week of tanning with the purchase of a bottle" (Black --> Free week in the HP... Revival --> Free week in the level 2) Depending on the price of the bottle
or
"2 weeks free with any Month Unlimited"
or
"Buy a bottle, get a moizturizer for $5"
or even

^This way you are still giving the customers a bargain, but you are not losing the money you would be losing by discounting the bottles.

Last year around XMAS we ran a free month in the level 3 with the bottle of Cypher, and you would never believe how many bottles of Cypher I sold. :)

We also did a "$10 HIGH PRESSURE DAY, purchase up to 20!"... People do not realize that when they purchase a package they are only paying 10-20 per session anyway, but it sure sounds good when you put it that way... People were calling over the phone giving credit card numbers if they could not make it in so that they would not miss out on "such a deal!"

Well Black is a horrible starting lotion. We had a salon practically give it away at $40 a bottle. Sure, they got color since the beds cant! But you have no idea how many orange customers I ended up with!

Just my 2 cents on black.... smell good, goes on good and it good for an advanced tanner. Not something you want to hand out :)

Woodlands

90% of my tanners during JASON haven't been starting tanners - most are the hardcore tanners. I've been thinking of giving cups of Black out since I've already got a bottle open. Mostly just to get folks in there so I don't get bored ;)

Well for my area that weekend is the start of things. So I get a LOT of people who are just starting to tan. The hardcore tanners usually stay away that weekend :)

tan till 09' sell it that day only...or if your already doing it then for a special price that day only...discount products to make room for 09 lotions

dont cut yourself short...this is when they start to spend again!

give more tans not cheaper prices.
