Rep Power: 2 ![]() | cash shortages Have any of you had a problem with cash being short while an employee was working. Every morning I come in and count our petty cash to make sure it is correct. This morning it was $5.00 short. (I know it is only $5.00 but its the principle) I contacted both employees that were working last nite and neither one of them knows what would have happened to it. My question is this, do any of you make your employees pay for these types of mistakes. I started keeping a log of this type of stuff. I know mistakes happen but I do not want them to continue to happen. So I was thinking of implementing a course of action. Like the first 2 times is a warning but if it happens a third time the employee will have to cover the value of what is lost. This is something I would also include in my employee manual. Also, we still keep track of packages on paper so sometimes employees do not take not of an expiration date of a package and allow the customer to tan even after package has expired. I was thinking of including this type of stuff too. What are every bodies thoughts? Please share. If anyone has any better ideas of how to handle please let me know. I just want these girls to always pay attention to whats going on!! And I have stressed the importance of this to them a billion times. |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Re: cash shortages I keep a our petty cash locked in the drawer with a camera overhead. If you are tracking the shortages, you should be able to narrow it down to one person- unless it is the both of them. Just say "I'm sorry I have to let you go because there have been multiple shortages on your shift." |

Keep in mind someone could SAY the til was short by the last person but be pocketing right away actually and try to setup the other. I have seen that happen. But usually knowing everything is being counted can curb this. And I would VERY MUCH consider switching to a computer system. You can get a used computer for dirt cheap and I bet you could get a copy of Helios 9 that no one needs. With a little help here you would be up and running in no time. Its way too easy to steal when things are on paper. Ironically its the reason I ended up being a salon owner. I was needing a job years ago, the computer system at the salon was down and things were tracked on paper. Long story short, the girl was fired and I was brought on after I fixed the system. It was suppose to be temp. Now I own the place I had tanned at, worked at.

Rep Power: 5 ![]() | Re: cash shortages Here in California it is illegal to make an employee pay for any losses. Check with your state laws before you charge an employee for losses. I know of a major retail chain near me that was charging emloyees for losses, they got sued by former employees and fined by the state. |

Rep Power: 7 ![]() | Re: cash shortages I agree with all above..I video tape the entire lobby and counter and cash register..and yes get a computer system! I have a software that also allows me to watch every click they make on the computer as well. Because they know I'm watching..nothing ever happens. :) |

Rep Power: 3 ![]() | Re: cash shortages if you are not there at shift change, make them count it down together and sign off on it. that is what we had to do when I was a bartender. then, when you check the sales per shift and are short, you know which shift and who. |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Re: cash shortages Yeah, i have a computer here at the salon. I just have not invested in salon software yet. I plan to do that in the near future. Thanks everyone for all the great ideas. I think I will start with having them count and sign off on the money before and after their shifts now instead of just doing it at the end of the nite. On another note, I have looked into Tantrack software. I have not had a chance to research the Helios software. Do you know about how much that costs? Thank you all! |

But thats for another topic if you want to start one :) You can check out the "Frack Helios" thread in the tech section for some reading :)
