Opening a Tanning Salon

I have been tanning for along time and just recently decided after much market research and studying my market that I wanted to open a tanning salon. I have over 6 years of experience with marketing and owning a business.. I have the perfect marketing plan and concept for the tanning salon

However, my question is.. How big of a square footage of space should I go for and how many beds? We're going toward the "Luxurious Tanning" and will provide complimentary beverages, celebrities tanning w/ us, etc..

Here are my questions.

1.) What software is best? SunLync, SunTouch?
2.) Would the location be best in a shopping center?
3.) How much capital are we looking at investing?
4.) Typically, how much do the beds run?
5.) What are some things I need to know about opening a tanning salon?

Thanks for all your help, my experience comes from running an entertainment company.. We have lots of ideas that will make this a great place to go.

Let me know!

I'm just curious -- what kind of market research have you been doing that would leave you to believe opening a tanning salon is a good investment?

How is your business plan (if you have one) fleshed out when you have no idea how many beds you want to put in there or how much each square foot is going to cost?

If you are serious, have ANY experience in opening, owning and operating any kind of business then I am going to suggest you hire a consultant (from this industry) to assist you in this endeavor -- Your capital investment is going to start at (lowballfigureof) 275K -- minimum --don't blow that kind of cash, in this industry without hiring a reputable consultant to go over these "perfect plans" with you.

PS: This advice is PRICELESS.

Re: Opening a Tanning Salon

I never stated that I had a business plan.

I have done market research on the market and I have done my research on the tanning salon and know that it can typically be profit actually 1-2 years if you do it right. I have the business experience to do things right.

I already determined that I want do 15 beds and 15 different rooms and 5 Levels. However, I haven't determined how much space I'm going to need for those rooms.

Let me know guys..

Hi Dolce,
1.) I can't say which software is the best I've only ever used Helios. So far its performed well and does all the things we need it to. No major issues.
2.) Try to pick a location where you get a lot of drive by traffic. We are in a small strip center but it's at an extremely busy intersection. We have 3 corporations with over 5000 employees across the street from us and we're centrally located in the middle of 14 high schools. IMO your location is probably one of the most important decisions since this is your first salon.
3.) For a higher end salon you can expect to spend between 250K and 350K.
4.) New commercial tanning units can cost anywhere from 5k to over 50K.
5.) There is A LOT to know about opening a tanning salon! :)

If you anymore specific questions I would be happy to tell you how we handled them.

Re: Opening a Tanning Salon

Eileen,
The location that I have in mind they have over 15,000 cars pass by on a daily basic.

Would that be a good location?
