Good idea to offer unlimited?
Hi ll,
New to the biz and was just curious how many of you offer unlimited or monthly tanning packages and how this has worked out for you. Currently we offer a Paygo program, Weekly, Minutes only on base beds and then sessions packages on all beds. Was considering adding others but would like input on your opinions. Thanks Sherrie |

Re: Good idea to offer unlimited?
We sell unlimiteds. That is what most of the customers want (more tanning for your dollar). Some salon owners would say that unlimiteds will cost you more than you gain BUT I see it as everytime the customer comes in to tan on their unlimited, it's an opportunity to upsell something--whether its an upgrade, additional service or product.

Re: Good idea to offer unlimited?
Get rid of the minute package immediately. They make no sense as you are not tanning someone by the minute you are tanning them to 1MED or the time it takes them to turn slightly pink. Also it's not saving your lamps cause the damage is done when they are turned on. What you save on not overheating them is replaced by them being started more often.
Other than that you should make a monthly package and then do multiple monthly packages as specials and what you can do is whatever you price the month at make "each additional month" like 25% cheaper. So if your month is $40 then give em the option of adding another month for $30each. You can do that at the time of sign up AND you can use it as a base for making up like 3 month packages. You don't want to discount too much cause people will expect it. Also, if you find that people are short term tanners do smaller deals like $35 for 3 weeks. They will see that the month is $40 and mostlikely jump on that one. Mixing it up is the best way.

Re: Good idea to offer unlimited?
I agree, the minute thing to me is crazy. Most of the tanning salons here do it. I just don't want to have to keep up with minutes just let them tan one session (15 min in mine) and let that be it. I charge by the visit also have 5-10-20 visit packages but unlimited is the best deal for us. And you will notice most people do not tan the whole month, I have some but most only tan maybe 10+ times a month but they keep on paying. I had one customer tan one time and come right back and buy another one when the other ran out. So I got $30.00 for one visit that month!

Re: Good idea to offer unlimited?
I'm in Tennessee also, and have found with my lamps, if I offer them the minute plan - 60 minutes for $whatever - they usually blow thru that in 4-5 visits - or less when there are two of them sharing the minutes that are very pale and nervous about burning - and then they wind up buying a monthly package each and lotion! They appreciate my letting them "take it slow" and then when they realize they aren't going to burn, they go for the 15 minutes - I'm actually averaging the same price.

Re: Good idea to offer unlimited?
Guess I should answer the question you asked....sorry. I sell unlimited all the time - sometimes buy one get one 1/2 off, buy two at a discounted price for each, etc.

Re: Good idea to offer unlimited?
Minutes or sessions, it comes down to math. One salon in my town does minutes and at first glance it looks like a deal. Until you start sucking them up like water.
We did some comparative math using an experienced tanner as the basis comparing us to competition. We started them at 8 minutes and bumped them up 2 minutes each time they came in for 10 visits total. That would be 158 minutes of usage. For 158 minutes, give or take, thats approx $60.00 although you would have to buy 200 minute for $80.00 with them. (.37 cent per minute @ $60.00) We do sessions and charge $50 for 10 visits. Not to mention you could go the full time of 20 minutes. (.32 center per minute, .25 cents per minute if you go the full time.) So at first minutes look good since you use what you use and pay for just that. For a sporadic tanner that may make sense. But for someone looking to build a full tan it may not work out so well. From a salon owner point of view this works out well, from the client end it may not and can be confusing if you start to offer several types of packages. The comp does offer unlimited level 1 use. Its $59 a month and you can go only 12 minutes out of 20, if you want to go longer you buy a minute packages to use with it!!!!

Re: Good idea to offer unlimited?
The way it works for me - I charge 24.00 for 60 minutes and they usually start around 8/10 minutes, definitely using a lotion (my beds are 15 minutes) and typically they are up to 15 minutes by the 3rd session, bumping them 2 or more minutes each time they tan - so, the way I see is if they buy 60 minutes at 24.00 and they tan 10 minutes the first time and then bump up to 12 and then to 15 they may get 5 tans outta that and it is almost $5.00 a tan when I charge $6.00 for a single session, or 10 for $45.00, one month unlimited for $49. They are then "hooked" and usually buy a month or 10 visits. So, am I wrong in thinking why not get an average of around $5 per tan with a 60 minute plan vs $4.50 for a 10 visit package or maybe less for the month unlimited and offer something to at least get them in the door? The only thing I see wrong with this is that when you take in the 8 minute tanner, you turn away a 15 minute tanner, but again, a walk-in can usually be squeezed in.........
