Have a family member working but not doing the job.
Okay, I have a family member working here in my salon who is a little out there. She brings her baby with her which is fine as long as she keeps him up out of the floor. But Saturday one of my other employees called me and said that the place was a total mess, food on the floor, garbage had not been taken out and food was left in there. A big drink under the desk not thrown away. Then yesterday as we were getting busy the family member showed up and started trying on clothes in the tanning room while people were waiting to tan! I mean I hate to start crap with people but I cannot put up with this. How can I get my point across with getting in an argument with her, she is very sensitive and gets her feelings hurt easily. I thought about typing up some employee responsiblity sheets and what to do and not to do. I really haven't had to in the past because all my employees have worked a long time here and know what to do. Any replies would be appreciated.

You just need to talk to her politely without getting into an argument. When an employee does something wrong don't you talk to that individual. I'm sure it doesn't get into an argument so why should this conversation with a family member.

Let her go now before it gets worse.
Never hire family or friends... ever!

Re: Have a family member working but not doing the job.
well I typed up some typical rules like daily and closing procedures which I hope she sees, there right here on the book so maybe she will see them, I'm pretty sure she will ask me about it but I will just have to say I have had a few complaints and considering she has never worked in a tanning business before that they are something for her to go by. Tanners are real funny people, you **** them off one time they leave. She is supposed to work this sat but we have a baby shower to go to and she said well my husband can work for me, I said absolutely NOT! We had guys working but they just didn't work out, for some reason ladies just don't feel comfortable with a guy around, she acted like it made her mad, but I hate it for her.

Re: Have a family member working but not doing the job.
Don't wait for her to "see" the checklist. Show it to her, go over it with her and let her know what is expected of her. Every employee should know what is expected of them. she cannot handle it, fire her. Sometimes the worst part of owning and managing a business is making the unpopular decisions. So, either buck up and confront the situation or delegate the situation to someone who is more capable than you are at handling it. If your other employees see this behavior is acceptable, they will mimic it and lose respect for you because you tolerate it. Nip it, now!

OMG! Family members and business do not mix!!! If you are avoiding talking to her now it will only get worse. It is nice to think family members will be great employees ..because they care right?? Wrong.....they are to emotional and heaven forbid you actually tell them you want them to be professional. The next conversation is that you are picking on them because you told them to take out the trash and to get off the phone& help a customer. Your family member will cost you more in the long run.

Re: Have a family member working but not doing the job.
I disagree 100% with family run businesses not working. I've been part of family run businesses for 47 years. If you're not capable of running a family run business or any business maybe that's the real issue. :)
I would have every employee initial a copy of the rules as well.
