Re: Have a family member working but not doing the job.
I agree on not hiring family, its different when you are brought up in the company though. Its another thing to hire family "because they need a job". I get that A LOT!
Anyway. Show her the list and explain to her what needs to be done. We had guys working but they just didn't work out, for some reason ladies just don't feel comfortable with a guy around... That may be true in many smaller towns, but I now employee an all male staff and its been working well. But that may be more of an age thing, the staff is young (21 to 27) and very personable. I also find the guys actually do everything and more than needed or asked. The girls I have had rarely perform duties and often have their mom call them in sick! lol Anyway, as I have often said there are those who do their job and those who PERFORM their job, I am looking for performers.

You wont let her husband work? Would you let some other person with no experience work? Can anyone cover the shift - can i call my friend joe he needs an extra shift?

Re: Have a family member working but not doing the job.
Money and blood don't mix. I live by that. It's very hard when you have family in the business mix. This is just the tip of the ice berg. I would be very cautious going forward from here. If there is a discrepancy over $ that will be the ultimate demise.
My Uncle owned a TV store in Jersey with his father and brothers...lets just say he hasn't talked to the majority of them in over 20 years because of the stress of the business. I know this is worse case scenario; however, I do not want what had happened to my uncle's family happen to anyone else. Remember, if this family member really screws up...you can terminate this family member, but you will see them again at Thanksgiving and Christmas, which will make the holidays fun. If you hire employees that are not relatives you will never have to see them again. I would re-think about it....

Re: Have a family member working but not doing the job.
I agree gidget. I think she is an exception to the rule. I personally had to learn the hard way. I gave chances to my mom, 3 sisters, and even distant cousins. None of them worked out. But I have had other non related employees that have been with me for over 3 years now. My business runs much smoother. I can just tell them what I expect and it gets done instead of people having hurt feelings.

Re: Have a family member working but not doing the job.
The solution to this is very simple. Go over exactly what is expected (work 1 or 2 shifts with her to show her how you want everything done, if you have to). I suggest compiling an employee manual (that is very specific in laying out the duties) & have her sign it. If she doesn't straighten up and do her job, get rid of her. Seems to me like she is taking advantage of the situation. If it were any other employer, I'm sure she'd be long gone for pulling what she has.

Re: Have a family member working but not doing the job.
Here's the thing- she's likely expecting leniency because she's family. So even making guidelines, going over what you expect from employees, etc, may not work if she sees herself as a family member instead of a 'real' employee. She may not think the rules apply to her, basically. So I don't think it's enough for you to let her know what you expect from your employees, you have to add on that while she is on the clock working at the salon or representing the salon in any manner, she is an employee first, family second.
