I had to fire an employee yesterday because she was caught sleeping several times when it was slow. Now we are crazy busy and I caught her sleeping again, right before closing time but still, someone could have come in to tan. She was also giving away free tans to her friends (which I didn't discover until after I fired her) and calling off at the last minute, putting me in a bind. Now, is it just me or should she have not been fired after the first time I caught her asleep? I gave her plenty of chances. Sure enough, an hour after I fired her, her mom came storming in demanding to know what happened. When I told her she just didn't think those were reasons to fire someone, her little girl is a good girl, how could I do this, blah blah blah. I just wasn't in the mood to hear it. Has anyone had someone's PARENTS come in after they fired someone? I would have been mortified if my parents had done that when I was younger. Ridiculous.

Re: My first firing
Yep, hired a girl she was late the first 3x she worked. Fourth day she came in hair all a mess, a pajama top, and shorts so short I could see everything (against dress code) and 5 minutes late. I said go home and don't come back. 2 days later her dad came in and wanted to know why I let her go. I said, I hired your daughter because she was an 18 year old adult. I can't and won't discuss her employment status with you. However, I will tell you that I fire employees for only good reasons.

Re: My first firing
I've had parents come in all the time when I fire kids. Bottom line, tell them, your kid is old enough to get a job, let them handle the situation. Then, when that isn't good enough, ratlle off all the crap their kids did and that will shut them up. Even better, if you record what your staff does, sit the parents down and "roll the tape".

Re: My first firing
I never had parents calling me after I fired someone but one day one of the receptionist (25)came in my office in tears. She thought she was pregnant and wanted to abort. She had called her mother but the stupid mom had told her to call her later because she was in bed sleeping!!!! So I send her to the clinic to make sure that she is pregnant. Couple of minutes later that nut of a mother call me "Hi, I am Myriam's mommy and I was wondering if you could tell me what is wrong with her because she called me crying this morning". I told her that her daughter was 25, I was not a daycare director and if she wanted to talk to her to call her directly. What a b*tch. Finally I ended up going with her to get the abortion because Mommy dearest didn't want get up at 6am to drive across town.

Re: My first firing
and we all wonder what is wrong with the kids these days?!?! The parent of this child pretty much summed up by coming down and asking what had happened.....they are babying their children way too much!!! So much so, that they think they can get with anything and mommy and daddy are just too take care of it. Drives me nuts!!!!!!!
Actually had a mother call me the other day and ask if we could put restrictions on her 16 year old's tanning habits and she feels that every day is a bit much. I explained to her that we had told her daughter previously she should not tan that often and I would be happy to place a restriction on her account since she is under 18. The mother then asked me what I was going to say to her daughter when she came in. I told her that I was going tell her that we had spoken to her about not tanning every day and your mother is concerned therefore, etc. etc. She then asked if I could not tell the daughter that she called and was the one who ultimately placed the restrictions on her account. Umm -- NO!!!! What is with the parents these days - stand up to your kids!!!!!! what a great future we have |

Re: My first firing
U were not in the wrong when u fired an employee for sleeping they are there to work not sleep or do anything esle but work. I mean really if I were u I would have done the same thing and then told the parents that there daughter is old enough to handle being fired or laid off samething and should handle it in a mature fashion. Not get upset and tell mommy and daddy dearest .
